Scotland had its biggest clan gathering ever this weekend in Edinburgh, culminating in a clan parade up the Royal Mile finishing at Edinburgh castle. The hereditary chief of the surname in Scotland, Charles Kennedy (Marquess of Ailsa) was there to greet Kennedys. The picture above shows the Kennedy chief with his three feathers on the right with my father John Kennedy on the left. We had Kennedy visitors from Scotland, England, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. The most popular question by far was "isn't Kennedy an Irish name?"!. One woman just wasn't having it that there could be a separate group with the same surname, but in fact surnames often have multiple origins. More on this fascinating topic, one day.

Do you have more pictures of the Gathering?

I would love to see more photos, as well.
This photo made me smile. The gent on the right bears a resemblance to my father, whose mother was a Kennedy :).

These are great pictures! (Once I got my computer to take them correctly.) I find it interesting that your father is John Kennedy. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, my brother found it difficult to convince others who he really was: John Kennedy. In addition, my father's mother was Caroline Kennedy. Pres John Kennedy had a brother Bobby who was Robert Francis. My father had a sister Bobbie who was Frances Roberta. Had my baby sister (almost decade gap in ages) been my baby brother, I would have a brother Edward. When my baby brother did come along, he got Edward as a middle name. The reason? "I won't have another kid with the same name as THOSE Kennedys!" (As you can tell, my mother didn't think too much of those Kennedys.) Edward's first wife was Joan; my name is Joanne.

"Isn't Kennedy an Irish name?" Everyone around thought we were Irish Catholic Democrats. Wrong on all accounts!
Well, I am descended from 5 consecutive generations of John Kennedys and my own name Iain is a modernised Gaelic rendition of John. But its a fairly 'neutral' forename which has been used by Irish and Scottish Kennedys alike, as has Robert. Francis is preferred by the Irish; Edward by the Irish and English but is very rare in Scotland.

These naming patterns can be quite handy in pointing to an origin although they are getting more diluted with time.
Everyone used to insist we were Irish Kennedy's and I was living in Texas in 59, down in the Valley, and took all kinds of heat because people thought I was "one of those Catholics Kennedys who would let the Pope rule the US''. My grandfather was Dr. Walter Urban Kennedy, his father was Urban Bernard Kennedy, and his father was William Kennedy..and all were Scottish. My grandfather kept me in jumpers, skirts, all Kennedy clan plaids as grew up. I have have a cape of the plaid, I got in Lynville, NC, at the Grandfather Mountain Games.
I didn't get to vote in the 60 election as I had not had Texas residency for 6 months, and I had a Texas Driver's License, and I couldn't vote absentee in IN..as I hadn't registered. In fact, I was a college student and literally got caught with no residency..because my mother moved to Ohio and I never lived in Ohio.
It's worth pointing out that the Highland Kennedys were and still are Roman Catholic, plus there are loads of Catholic Kennedys in the lowlands and half those in Belfast are Catholic too (including Brian Kennedy the singer who has toured with Van Morrison)... But Ayrshire is about as pure Church of Scotland as you can get. Until recently Glasgow Celtic FC had a John Kennedy on the squad who I believe was Irish Catholic but sadly he has had to retire from the game due to a persistent knee injury.
