Rachel Jane (Kimberling) Hill

Rachel or Rach as her brother refers to her in his letter, was the sixth child and fifth daughter of Mariam (Craig) Kimberling and Joseph Nathaniel Kimberling. She was born January 7, 1848, probably in Union Township, Mason County, West Virginia. Nothing is recorded of her young childhood. She was one of twelve children.
The date of her marriage was 18 Nov 1868 Mason County, in West Virginia. Her first child, Nancy Hill was thought to have been born in 1868. She was to have four other children, before they ventured to Kansas, Josephine Hill, born 1869 or 1870, John Hill, born about 1871, Wesley Ward Hill, born September 20, 1873, and Odus Grant Hill, born January 19, 1876. Rachel and Enoch lived at Chestnut Orchard, near Castle, Jackson County, West Virginia prior to there moving to Kansas. The Chestnut Orchard farm had been acquired from Enoch Hill's parents Labon Hill and Rebecca (Woodruff) Hill. When Rachel and Enoch moved to Kansas they sold the Chestnut Orchard farm to Enoch's sister and brother in law, Alzina (Hill) Shinn and Joshua Shinn.
Odus Grant Hill always told that the three oldest of his brothers and sister died on the trip from West Virginia to Kansas and were buried alone the way. This would have been, Nancy, Josephine, and John. It was recorded that Odus was six months old at the time Rachel and Enoch set out with their worldly goods, traveling westward to Kansas.
Rachel and Enoch had four more children. Lela Hill, born about 1877, place not recorded. Mary Ellan Hill, born April 27, 1878, in Reno County, Kansas. Ova May Hill, born May 8, 1883, near Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. Carl Enoch Hill, born May 26, 1889, Rural Reno County, near Nickerson, Kansas.

I'd love to do a Kimberling tree on Excel with pictures! Btw, I'll send you that Excel file pronto. Best, Marilyn

The following picture was taken September 1938. It is a picture of the Kimberling Cemetery, Mason County, West Virginia, USA.

Written on the back of this picture by Carl Enoch Hill: If I looked, I woud be looking across a valley and creek to Uncle Nath's house. You can see the road in the background. Just over the rise is the old Kimberling house. Around this hill to the left, about a mile is the old Nat store and Post Office.

The attached picture was taken about 1938. It is the home where Rachel Jane (Kimberling) Hill was raised. Picture was taken by Rachel's son Carl Enoch Hill.

The Following was written on the back of this picture: This is the picture of the old Kimberling home, where Ma (Rachel) spent her childhood. This was originally the back of the house. The creek "13" and the old road run just the other side of the house which was the front. On the other side of the creek is the road to Uncle Nath's, then a high hill. Note the woods behind the house. This was a log house now boarded up. Grandfather Kimberling gave this place to Uncle Lou (Lewis). Most if not all, their children were borned here. Lida was standing up near the road when she took this picture. The film got light struck and was not printed. As I wanted this picture very much I ask them to print it anyway, then by enlarging it I got a fair picture for you. Pic. was received from Evelyn (Brooks) Belford. Writting on the back was done by Carl Hill, I think. Phill Pitzer
