Files within the Legacy pgm.

Firstly, exercise care! The zip files are your backup files, so it is up to you how many and for how long your keep these. I always have a minimum of 3 of these for each Legacy fdb file. The Name.fdb files are the files containing all your data for the tree "Name" and, unless you are absolutely certain you never want that data again, do not delete it. Obviously the Name....Zip files are the backups corresponding to Name.fdb.

Similarly the files with other extensions should not be deleted, unless you have deleted the corresponding Name.fdb.

I would back all the files up to some kind of storage such as a CD, etc. or an online storage facility. I keep only the latest files and discard the rest that clutter up my computer. In some cases I have more than one copy of each file backed up just to be on the "safe" side. I see no reason to keep old files that are not of use hanging around on my hard drive. Anytime I update my Legacy database. I back it up with a new date after the name of my file so I can keep track of all of them. One question, Lew, are your zip files GEDCOM files you downloaded from elsewhere or what and also are these 13 "blocks" of files you speak of different databases or just old ones you revised?

Thanks folks. I deleted the old version that I started with before I was sure I wanted to use Legacy. That was the
one I had marked as Name 1 . When I started to do the thing right I called it same name but 2. Then each time
I added material it made all the other ZIPS so I deleted all but the last couple. I also removed the folders for sounds
and videos. I have absolutely no intent of ever doing any thing with them.. The pgm still open OK and everything
is good. I may be temped to "fiddle" a bit more later. :-) Now I'll do a backup of the entire drive on an external
and maybe even do an .fdb on a thumb drive. for good measure.. I still have to find a way to check out the
temporary CD I made to see if I can distribute this work to the other Hartswick's around the country that have
been helping with the data.. I need to find a friend to try the CD that doesn't have a genealogy pgm. on his
computer to see if it works. :-) Oh! Steph, all this is original entry on my computer no "imports".

The recipients of the CD will need to have Legacy install on their PC's in order to run the data. You can download the full Legacy Program from their website and copy this onto the CD, Alternatively you could create and copy a GEDCOM (5.5 is the common version) which the recipient will be able to run on their own software.
