Genealogy Wise

The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

First off, I love Legacy and recommend it to every genealogist I talk to and even friends and family who are just interested in compiling current info.

One area I would like to see improved is an enhanced method of recording timelines.  For instance, I have ancestors who fought in various wars and served in a variety of locations at different times.

I would like to be able to record an ancestor's military history.  Of course, I can set up an event and insert those combined dates in the date field but doing so doesn't represent the time line correctly when generating reports. Currently it would be out of sequence:

10 Nov 1859-10 Oct 1879 Military Service

15 Nov 1859-3 Mar 1862   Served in Gibraltar

30 Mar 1862-21 Aug 1879  Served in Malta

21 Dec 1875                    Received good conduct medal

I would like to see additional "Date From" and "Date To" fields or at least the ability to add [onDate], [fromDate], [toDate] qualifiers so that a chronological report would put the events in correct order such as:

10 Nov 1859 Joined the Military

15 Nov 1859 Stationed in Gibraltar

3 Mar 1862   Returned to Ireland

30 Mar 1862 Served in Malta

21 Dec 1875 Received good conduct medal

21 Aug 1879 Returned to Ireland

10 Oct 1879 Retired from Military

Another useful example of this would be when you have an ancestor living at a particular address for a number of years.  Currently, you put an entry in for each date and link it to the source that confirms they are at that address on that date.  A cleaner way would be to use a date range and link it to the relevant source citations.

Brad,

You can, of course, create your own timeline instead of using Events see: View>Timelines and use the Help files on that screen to find out how to to it.
