It is estimated that each of us has at least one ancestor who arrived in this country via South Carolina. Charleston being the Ellis Island for captured Africans in the early days of this country, Are there many records of the ships that entered or instances of slave auctions available for research? My own 3rd great-grandmother lists her 1812 birth in South Carolina. I have tried tracing the slave holders thru BLM records but see no mention of Hollis in the low country. Any suggestions?

Hi Joyce,
I am seeing some Hollis landowners in SC, within the online index of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Here is an example:

Hollis, Edward, Plat for 450 Acres on the South Side of Wateree River (the image of the plat is online, too).

There are several more. Here is the link to the online index, then you can search on name Hollis. To see if there are any names of enslaved people associated with Hollis, your search strategy would be Individual: Hollis and Topic: Slaves, Named. I see quite a few Hollis records, hope you find some of interest for your research.

Cheers,
Toni :)
Oops! Forgot to include the link to the SCDAH online index, in reply to Joyce! Here it is:

Sorry!
