We're Celebrating 7 Days of Juneteenth in the Lowcountry with New Records Every Day
Hi Everyone!
It's Toni, writing to share the news that in honor of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday (Saturday, June 19), we will be adding new records every day this week. You can visit our Blog to find links to each day's new content.
Because Juneteenth is a celebration of Emancipation, for each day we have chosen documents which were written in the earliest days of freedom in the Lowcountry.
Here are the records we have posted so far:
Day 1: Freedmen's Labor Contract between Catherine G. White of Berkeley Co...: This document is one of the rare Freedmen's Labor Contracts we have seen that list family relationships among the families who entered the contract.
Day 2: Georgetown, SC Voter Registrations, Hope Chapel Election Precinct, ...: Georgetown is a burned county, the courthouse was burned in 1865, so records dating before 1870 are rare for Georgetown. Here are 20 pages of names of voters who registered in 1868.
Be sure to check our Blog to see each day's new records.
Happy Ancestor Hunting and Happy Juneteenth from the crew at Lowcountry Africana!
