The website: www.thornber.net/cheshire/htmlfiles/poeover.html has a great picture of a stone saying: "The gift of Mrs. Ellen Mainwaring to her son Thomas Mainwaring, Esq., 1654". This is at Mainwaring Chapel, at the house of Sir Philip Manwaring, 1589-1661, at Chester, England. It also has illegitimate Mainwaring descendants.

A Mainwaring on the internet had a cute picture of a Border Collie. My childhhood "Pal" was a Border Collie. From the website: www.piattresearchers.net/manning5.html  by Terry Manning, temanning@aol.com Midway down is the Hilton family. It says Mrs. Ellen Mainwaring Hilton married 1570, died 1606. Mr. Manning descends son Wm. Paul Hilton born Cheshire, England 1587.  It is a DNA website. "Mainwaring Hilton was born c1627". He is a Waldron desxcendant and I descend Gen. Waldron. Something about Norwich near Liverpool. His website uses a very good research engine called Finda.net. As he is a Mainwaring descendant, you might invite him to join your Mainwaring website?  Jim

Capt. William Hilton, Sr. (wed Ellen Mainwaring)  was the son of Roger Mainwaring, fishmonger, of the fishmongers guild, London, England. So it is quite possible, Ellen was of the London area, or the area where the river (Thames?) meets the ocean. The book says Roger was one of the many "cadet" Hilton branches; that is under the law of prima genture (spell-check has lost it's spell here: not helping), not the senior son who got all the real estate. Roger's brother was Sir Wm. Hilton, the sons of Wm. Hilton (brother of Sir Thomas Hilton) and Margaret, daughter of James Metcalfe of Nappa Hall, Wensleydale, York. My Roger's sister, Eleanor, wed John Horsely. I descend Landgrave Edmund Bellinger, Sr., of South Carolina. There was a Col. Samuel Horsely, Landgrave, of South Carolina. I note the name Roger was used in the Mainwaring family also. If I had an e-mail address for you, I could attach a little of my South Carolina cassique and landgrave original art, actually copyrighted (not just applied for) art. However I'm no artist, alas. Ancient Hilton Castle still has 20 stone coats-of--arms over it's entrance.  Names like: Percy, Nelville, Skirlaw, Wessington (kin to President Washington), Bowes, "Hotspur", Gaunt, Et Al, or is it Al Ette--mostly a family of lawyers who named their girls "Sue". My bad humor.

According to the book "The Hyltons of Hylton Castle", 2001, by Eric William Lamberton, the 1,000 year old castle overlooks the River Wear at Monkwearmouth, Northumbria, England, just below Scotland. Lambton helped found Canada. If memory serves, both Govs. Dudley and Winthrop were members of the fishmongers guild? The book seems to say Capt. Wm. Hilton, Sr. (wife Ellen Mainwaring) and his brother Edward Hilton (I descend Capt. Wm. Hilton, Jr's brother Edward Hilton, Sr., of Exeter, N.H.) were the sons of Roger Hylton. There is a photo of Lambton Castle in the book.  Were there Mainwarings in Northumbria?.
