Hello.  Doing some research on my husband's Martins.  He is descended from a Rigdon Martin from Colleton County, South Carolina.  He did a Y-DNA test and his closest match is a Martin who descends from a North Carolina Martin.  Have yet to find a common ancestor.  Anyone doing Martin research in the South Carolina area?

Seeking information on the following Martin line....Marion, Tenn. via St. Luis to Austin, Texas......................................................................................................

Mary Molly Martin was born in Virginia about 1790.  She is my great-great grandmother as determined by U.S.  censuses from latter years.  I am the great grandson of William Edward Martin and the grandson of James Marion Martin.  Mary Molly.started having children in Virginia in about 1810.

Her first child was Leanna Druzilla Martin (1810 – bef. 1880, Webster, Missouri) born in Virginia followed by another daughter Alice Martin (July 1813 – 1903, Austin, Tx.) born in Virginia again.  Her first son was James D. Martin born in 1819 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee. Her daughter Sarah Ann Martin was also born in Tennessee in April of 1822 followed by Thomas P. Martin born about 1824 in Tennessee, and then another son Morgan Martin born about 1827 also in Tennessee.  My great Grandfather William Edward Martin was born January 3, 1828 in Indiana.  Her last child was Goolman (pronounced Go-olman)            D. Martin born the 20th of March 1833 in Tennessee.

In the 1840 Marion County Tennessee census Mary Martin is shown as head of household (only the head of household in shown on US census prior to 1850) and living two households from her is john Tatum, her son-in law.  Since her last child  was born in Tennessee about 1833 and she is shown as head of household in 1840, her husband disappeared from the scene between those two years.  She is not shown as head of household in the 1830 Tennessee census which would lead us to believe that one of the Martin males shown in the 1830 Marion Co. Tenn. census was her husband.  As of the writing of this narrative I have not been able to determine which one it would be.  Therefore as of this writing I do not know who my great-great Grandfather Martin was.

He d. bef 27 Jun 1860. The 1860 RI Census lists Rebecca as widowed. Any leads or genealogical sources on the Martins in New England would be greatly appreciated.

Lille Amanda Martin 1893-1971 my father's mother is my link to the Martin Family - Lester W Galbreath

Our Martin family began with my 28th Great Grandfather in France with the birth of  Martin De Tours in 1003 AD. At  that point in history people did not usually travel more than a few miles from home and at first only had first names and no surnames, However the time came when people with the same name were becoming confusing so a second designation was added such as being referred to by their occupation, where they were from etc, Such as James the Wheeler, the son of James, or numerous others. His name was Martin and he lived in Tours France thus Martin Tours. The De  in a name denoted the first person in a family line or a direct descendant from the first of a family. therefore Martin De Tours.

My branch of the Martin Family Tree descends through his son Martin De Tours Jr. born 1020 in Normandie, France.

I have a file on the Martins that landed in Virginia and migrated through Tennessee to Missouri to Texas. I also have a file on the descendents from Martin de Tours to Virginia. I would be happy to share information.

Further to my message on my ancestor Charles William MARTIN born c1789s of Magdeburg, Prussia, there is a suggestion of an earlier connection with Charleston which I assume to be South Carolina. If he was of black African (or Native American) descent, he the MARTIN name would have been the slave owner.

Any research suggestions would be appreciated.
