James Mason, a Quaker, with wives Hopy Smith and Margaret Randall -from RI to MA to NY to OH

Still stuck at this brickwall.  My 3rd great grandfather was JAMES MASON who married his 3rd wife, my 3rd grandmother Margaret Randall (Allen) (Clark) (Mason).  I now have a copy of his bible records, in a Quaker bible.  Some of the dates were written in the Quaker way.  It confirmed that his birthdate was 28 Aug 1773 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA (I THINK it used to be in a part what was then in Rhode Island because three of his children lived past 1880 and they all say he was born in Rhode Island.  I found a vital record, based on his birthdate, that his parents were James MASON and Bette ALLEN. (not James Mason, b. on 3 Apr 1774 in Adams, Berkshire Co. MA because his father willed him some land and I believe he stayed in NY, son of Philip Mason and Mercy Scott ) I've tried really hard to find further info on his James Mason and Bette Allen but could not go further back.

There are some other clues I've unearthed since then. The bible recorded showed that James Mason was first married to Hopy SMITH on 20 Oct 1793 and I found that out it took place in Cheshire, Berkshire, MA and that they were residents of Adams, Berkshire, MA at the time.  (Hopy was born in Smithfield, Providence, RI).  Smithfield was a hotbed for the Quaker community, and many moved from there to Cheshire.

1) They had  their first son named Allen Mason born in 1794 in Pownal, Bennington Co., VT, which is right north of Adams.

2) They had their 2nd child Betsey Mason, b. in 1797 in MA, and I believe probably in Berkshire Co., MA.  Then this family moved "west".  (Betsey married Philander Wood).

3)  Nancy Mason b. in 1800 in Palmyra, Ontario Co. (now is in Wayne Co.), NY.  Married someone with the surname BRAMAN.

4).  Mercy Mason b. 1804 in Perington, Ontario Co., NY (now Perinton, Monroe Co.).  Married Darius Southworth.

We do know that Hopy died in 1821 and James remarried to a Sally Aldrich but this marriage lasted 2 years, no children.  He remarried again to Margaret who was twice married before on 21 Sep 1825 in Parma, Monroe Co., NY.  They had 3 more children, all daughters:  Sally R Mason, Edna S Mason, and Anna May Mason.

(Margaret Randall was born in Maine, married William P Allen who died before their 2nd son was born and grew to adulthood, remarried to John Cook Clark who was previous married to Lydia Bancroft.)

James and Margaret raised their children as Quakers.  I worked on some of the later generations and found that some of them were raised as Quakers.  But they later converted to Episcopalian Methodists.  James Mason worked with the Underground Railroad in Ohio.

James died in Medina Co. in 1849 and Margaret moved to Michigan to be with her youngest daughters and died in Climax, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan in 1863.

I had two relatives take the Family Finder test through FTDNA, who descended from James Mason and Margaret Randall (plus several other cousins who also descend from both or one or the other in this clan.).  Please contact me if you're in this clan, from any of these spouses or have any questions.

Biggest question we have is which MASON LINE do we belong to.  It's my understanding that there were 2 Mason lines in Rhode Island.  We hope the Family Finder tests will help us find cousins.  We are still looking for a male Mason cousin from this clan to confirm through FTDNA's yDNA test...please contact me!
