I descend from John Putnam and Priscilla Gould, they are my 11th great grandparents
Hello Andrew, I'm just starting to compile names in my search. Don't know much about my Father's side of the family yet.
How far back have you gone on your Putnam line?
Not far Andrew. My grandfather "William Putnam" abandoned my father, my grandmother and Uncle Marvin when they were very young in California. They had a dairy/sheep farm in Placerville, CA. My grandmother kept the farm going. She was courted by a cowboy who hoboed up on the trains from Texas and they married and had my Uncle Jim. I think I found William Putnam's grave marker. My Grandmother's maiden name was Maude Leah (not sure about this middle name) Dunham. She was born in Louisiana and her father worked for the Hudson Bay Company. He moved my Grandmother out to CA. and he died on the San Fransisco Wharf after a night of drinking and gambling. He was mugged. At least that's is how the story goes.
Years ago I met a young man in Sacramento who had the last name of Putnam. He looked exactly like my brother. He said his Grandfather was William Putnam, but his Grandmother never knew that he had a family that he had abandoned. He begged me not to say anything to anyone. I wish I had kept his name.
1930 U.S. Federal Census, Maywood, Los Angeles County, California:

Putnam, William H., age 31, born Oklahoma, parents born Indiana
Wife: Putnam, Maude L., age 28, born Louisiana, parents born Lousiana
Son: Putnam, William M., age 3, born California
Daughter: Putnam, Helen, age 1, born California
Father: Putnam, Daniel R., age 71, born Indiana, father born Kentucky, mother born Indiana

William H. Putnam's occupation is body builder at an automobile factory.

Does this look like a match?

California Birth Index:

William Marvin Putnam (born 18 Apr 1929 in Los Angeles County)
Mercy! It sure does look like them. My Father was born in 1934 so he missed the Census. My father,my Uncle and my Grandmother never spoke about a sibling sister that had died. For that matter they never spoke of anything at all.
I found this entry also:
California Birth Index: Allen Gladden Putnam born 2 Nov 1934 Los Angeles County Mother's Maiden Name: Dunham

The entry for William Marvin Putnam gives "Lunham" as mother's maiden name, which is most likely a misspelling for "Dunham," if the birthdate of 18 Apr 1929 is your uncle's birthdate.

With William H. Putnam's father Daniel in the house, it is easier to determine, going back, to see what your Putnam line is.
That is my father. Allen Gladden Putnam.
I found your grandfather in the 1910 Census with his parents and siblings:
1910, Williamina, Yamill County, Oklahoma

Putnam, Daniel - Head - age 52 (born Indiana c1858)
Putnam, Ida - Wife - age 44 (born Indiana c1866)
Putnam, Nara M. - Daughter - age 17 (born Oklahoma c1893)
Putnam, John W. - Son - age 14 (born Oklahoma c1896)
Putnam, Willie H. - Son - age 11 (born Oklahoma c1899)
Putnam, Ernest R. - Son - age 9 (born Washington c1901)
Putnam, Nellie M. - Son - age 3 (born Washington c1907)
Putnam, Benjamin F. - Son - age 1 (born Oregon c 1909)

Daniel R. Putnam, your great grandfather, is a farmer in 1910.
Daniel and Ida were married for 18 years as of 1910. Ida died between 1910 and 1930 since Daniel is a widower in the 1930 Census.
They seemed to have travelled around very often:
1900 Census, Madison, Polk County, Missouri

World War I Draft Registration, 1918:

This weekend I need to sit down and start the family tree on the Putnam side of the family. I sent an email off to my Uncle Jim ( he is the half brother of my father Allen and William Marvin) to send forward to my Uncle Marvin, William Marvin. I haven't heard back for either of them yet. I don't know where your finding all of this information , care to clue me in? I've been working long days and my work is in demand, people are waiting on me at this point so I don't have a lot of time to hunt around. This is mind boggling! But so wonderful! I've been in the dark for so many years on this.
I found Daniel's parents; age matches, and states born matches, as well as migration west. They are listed as "Putman" until 1900.
