Merchant Marine from East Coast before or during WWI?

My grandfather, Harold Manville McDonald, was in the MM either before or during WW1. We have a family story that on one of their excursions the crew mutineed in South America. Ancestry.com, [US version], doesn't have anything on it. Anyone have any clues? I would very much appreciate anything you have that would get me started. Thank You in Advance, Juanita Hendrickson
