I am looking for an Alfred Raymond. He was born between 1840-1860 in Arkansas. He was african american. I have located a Slave Owner with the same name, but cannot pin him down. He was possibly married to Mary Clayton (Raymond) in either Arkansas or Mississippi.

They did not stay together very long and she moved between Mississippi and Memphis and stayed with various relatives. Their son was James C. Raymond Sr., born in Mississippi 1917. Any information would help. Thank you.

Good morning, Danielle-

Welcome to the group! Hopefully we can assist in your search. :)

What records do you have for Alfred? Or Mary Clayton? What information do you have for James C Raymond, Sr.?
Good Morning!!

I have nothing but a name for Alfred. Mary Clayton (Raymond, Webb) was born 18-Sep-1894 in Mississippi and died May, 1979 in PGH, PA; James Charles Raymond, Sr (my grandfather) was born 22-Jul-1917 and died in Pittsburgh, 02-Jul-1997. I have found her on a few census records, but unfortunately, most of the older known relatives from Memphis and Mississippi are dead. My grandparents moved to PGH in 1943.
Hi Danielle-
I think I see Mary Raymond, age 35, Divorced, living with son James age 12 in Memphis City, Shelby County, TN on the 1930 census. They have a roomer, Nelson Rudley living with them? Mary was a cook for a private family. Have you tried to find divorce records if this is the right family?
Yes, that is the correct family. I have a copy of that census. I have not been able to find any marriage verification. I was not sure if it was a legal marriage or if she just assumed that last name for a while. I discovered that with my maternal grandmother, she assumed a few different last names for welfare purposes.
Have you found Mary and James in 1920? I'm finding a few Raymonds in Memphis in 1920, but nothing that matches up-
No. I know that they moved a lot and stayed with various relatives.
Hi Danielle-
I see that James C Raymond is on the SSDI, do you have an obituary for him? Or have you tried to order his application for Social Security? I know there is a form on Rootsweb with a letter you can use to apply for his SS-5 form, which may give his father's name?(If you haven't done this already).

I checked for Alfred on Ancestry.com and saw the 1850 and 1860 slave records. The Alfred C and Alfred H Raymonds are found in Mississippi, I'm just curious what documentation you have that Alfred was from Arkansas? I'm not seeing an Alfred Raymond in the later census records, but that's just with a cursory search, not accounting for transcription/spelling errors. :)
I have the form and will order it soon. I am in the process of moving and do not currently have internet access at home. The only verification was by word of mouth from my GGrandmother. They did not speak about him much. My grandfather (James Sr.) did not have any kind words. I don't think that he ever had the opportunity to know him at all. I do have a picture of the person that we believe is him and the resemblance to my grandfather is almost unmistakeable! As far as I can tell, they were together for a short period of time (long enough to conceive) and then he supposedly went back to Arkansas.

Thank you for your help and if you happen to come across anything else, please let me know!!
Thank you, Danielle!

I will do a more extensive search through the sites I have access to and see what I can find. Do you have a date of death for Mary Clayton Raymond? And if you think of anything else, please post when you get the opportunity. :)

Good luck with the move, I recently moved and was without internet for 3 weeks, talk about a serious case of withdrawal. :)
Yes, she died in Pittsburgh, May-1979. She married David Webb in 1970, I believe. They are buried together in Memphis, TN. I have a photo of their headstones. Her full maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Clayton. She was a cook/housekeeper for the same family for several years in Shelby County.
One more thing I found- I think this may be Mary in 1920, she is on the census as Elizabeth, her age is off by ten years from her age in 1930), and she is living with a "Dock" Raymond, who is listed as 40, and is working as yard worker for a private family in Memphis, Shelby TN. James isn't there, and it is a census year which does not ask how many children was born to the family, but perhaps James was living with Mary's relatives?

Dock's birthplace and that of his parents is listed as United States, so he is a possibility?

In 1900, I find a Dock Raymond in Walnut Lake, Desha county, Arkansas, he was born circa March 1875, he is farmer, born in AR, and parents also born in AR.
Definitely! I would not have thought about looking for her middle name!! I will check it out as soon as I can.
