My brickwall is my 2nd great grandmother, Josie or Josephine Spann; I'm not sure of her maiden name. I was told her maiden name was Shanklin, but I haven't came across her on the census living with a Shanklin family. She was born about 1880 in Noxubee County,MS. She married Abram Spann, not sure what year. She had three children, a son named Walter Pippins( father unknown), unknown daughter name(died in house fire) and Quantillia Spann( my great grandmother). Is there anyway, to find the maiden name of your ancestors?

Depending on when she died, her death record may have her maiden name.
Hi Leeann,
I don't know why I didn't think of the death record.
Thank you
Hi GeneJ,
The information you have is correct; Abram and Joe Spann are my 2nd great grandparents.
I have to do some researching for Quantillia's death record. She died in 1976 in Illinois and her last name was Pruitt from her secornd marriage. The public family tree is my Williams for Quantilia Spann.
I tried to find Walter Pippins, probably living with a Pippins relatives at that time, but didn't find
anything. There were some Pippins families living in Noxubee County, MS, but I didn't see a
Walter. I did do some reearch on Walter Pippin, but never found who his father was.
Thank you, it did help to convert my comment to discussion.

Wow! You learn something new everyday. Thanks for the advice. I have to call my cousin, she was raised by her grandmother, Quantillia and see what she can tell me. She might have a copy of the death record, I made a mistake, Quantillia died in St. Louis, MO and was buried in Illinois. Long story.
I don't know why I didn't think about the death records show the maiden name of the mother. I have a copy of one of Quantillia's son death record and her maiden name is there. Thanks again.
Yes, Abe Spann was the stepson of Burrell Calhoun. and his mother was Scilla Spann. There were two other sons, Mistin( not sure of the spelling) and Edward. Scilla is mentioned on one the wills for Sumnter County, SC website as a slave to a Spann family.
Quantillia married Ben Williams and had about 15 children. Quantillia left MIssissippi after her first husband, Ben died and that was probably 1948. She did leave Mississippi many times( moving back and forth to St. Louis or East St. Louis). Her finally move to St. Louis, MO was in 1972. I remember visitng her in Mississippi in 1962. According to my father, Abe died about 1942 and he's not sure when his great grandmother died. He thinks before he was born (1933) or during his younger years.
Thank you -Jean
Hi GeneJ,
I have a contact in Jackson, MS, that might can help us. I need to email her and see if she can find
the record. Give me some time to contact her and I will let you know.
Hello GeneJ,
I have some good news and bad. My contact in Jackson, MS found the death certificate on Abram Spann, but didn't find anything for Josephine Spann. Abram died on November 20, 1940, there is very little information regarding his death, no cause and the informant is a William Perry. I haven't a clue who this Williams Perry was. Abram Spann was living with my grandmother, Minnie at the time of his death. I don't understand why she wasn't the informant. It doesn't listed his wife maiden name, just her first name and everything else is unknown. He was a widow at the time of his death, so Josephine Spann died between 1930 and 1940.

Walter Pippins was married to Hattie(?) and they had two daughters, Lillian and Anne. They lived near my great uncle Callie Hyde in Shuqualak, MS. My father said, they used to visit after they moved from Shuqualak, but he doesn't remember where they moved. I don't have anything on his daughters. Another brickwall? LOL
Hi GeneJ,
My grandmother,Minnie died in 1948 and was buried in a place called Mohigan cemetery(not sure of the spelling).
Part of the cemetery was destroy due to some construction of a pipline. I was told part of the cemetery is under water.I was wondering why there wasn't any autopsy at the time and why didn't the director asked the family for some information.Abe's daughter, Quantillia and granddaughter, Minnie were living at the time of his death.
