My people appeared in Lake Village, Arkansas in the 1900's. Our last name was Baker - my mother mother was originally from Pine Bluff, Arkansas it was said, her father was a well know minister in the community. My mother's mother name was Mattie Mason and she married a Charlie Baker from South Carolina in the early 1900's. They lived on the plantation of the Baker Family in Lake Village. They were considered sharecroppers. My grandmother Mattie (Mason) Baker had five children she bore and the names where Mattie (mullato); Charlie; Lillie Bee; Lewis and Virginia(my mother her birth was 12-25-1925). The Bakers has a daughter (Anglo) that name was Virigina Baker and she was born 12-2-1925). I found a link to my history from the anglo woman daughter, but her mother refused to talk with me and changed her telephone number. They moved to California and so did my family; and we both live in the same area. What do you think of that. My mother mother (Mattie) passed away in 1935 and my mother (Virginia) and her brother Lewis was sent to Chicago, Illinois. Her sister Liillie Bee was married to a Charlie Pierson out of Pine Bluff in 1935 and Charlie (oldest brother) and Mattie (sister) mulato, they disappeared to never return. My block is that I can not find any legal information on the Baker or Mason Family for the year of 1935. Help me with as much information as you can get for me. My grandmother is buried in the only all Black Church yard cemetery off the Hwy in (Chicot County), but the grave is not marked. I would like as much information as possible on my family during and before 1935.

Hi Denise-

I found Charley, Mattie, their daughter Mattie and their son Willie on the 1920 census in McConnell, Chicot County, Arkansas. It indicates Charley and his parents were from Alabama. Mattie was born circa 1885, Charley 1887, Mattie, 1915 and Willie circa 1917-18. Charley was a Cotton Farmer, Mattie was a farm laborer on the home farm, they were renting the property they lived on.
