Hello everybody!! This is my first post on this forum, so I'm happy to meet you all. My brick wall is the ever elusive Richard Exelby, born abt 1728, unknown where, but chances are it was close to Yorkshire England. He first married Sarah Gibson on May 19, 1757, St. Mary Bishophill, Yorkshire, England. Sarah died November 1759 and from parish records we know that on Jan 29, 1760 he married Jane Dunnel in Stillingfleet They had 9 children that are listed in the Copmanthorpe Parish Registry, and my connection is through Edward Exelby, born 1774, Copmanthorpe, Yorkshire, England. I have never been able to trace the birthdate or birthplace of Richard Exelby, and haven't a clue who his parents might be. He has been my biggest hurdle for the last seven years

Hi Mary-
I googled 'Richard Exelby' and there seem to be some Yorkshire Archological and Topographical Journals from the late 1880s that include detailed family genealogy for an Exelby family, but the date are in the 1500-1600s. possibly if you try searching on Google Books you will be able to find the right books that include the time frame for your RIchard?
Hi Kate! Yes, the 1500-1600 Exelbys are the ones that we are trying to tie Richard to. Almost certainly, they are related but I haven't been able to find proof of Richard's existence prior to his marriage.
Richard Exelby, Yorkshire, England

As requested, here is the FGS for Richard Exelby. Almost all of these sources are through the Copmanthorpe Parish Registry, St Giles and St. Mary Bishophill records. Richard's date of birth is calculated from the Copmanthorpe Parish Registry, which states he was 78 at the time of death. We haven't been able to crack Richard's parentage yet, "we" being cousins in England, Australia and the United States. I am in hopes that as new information becomes available we can find his parentage. He is my most challenging brick wall. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I should add that my most promising candidate is Richard Eshelby, born Feb 21,1730, Kirby Hill, Yorkshire to parents Robert Eshelby and Jane Ward

No, none at all. I've searched the Copmanthorpe Parish Registry and there is no mention of him, other than as father, so I am assuming that he was born in a different Parish? And yes, the numbers in brackets are source notations that I forgot to remove when I copied and pasted! LOL!
You are correct that none of the records indicate where Richard was born. About all I've got to go on are the Parish Registry notations, which are skimpy at best. His death registry states "Burials 1806, Nov 17, Richard Exelby, Laborer, 78". That's it, and it's actually more information than most, because it does provide an occupation. The birth of all children are the same, except for the dates. Eleanor's birth information says "Baptisms 1760, Nov 2, Eleanor d. Richd. Exelby" Not alot of information to go on, but I'm truly happy that I have as much information as I do. I have scanned copies of the actual transcriptions. I do not know where either of the mothers were born. Birthdates were approximated from the age of death listed in the parish registries, but no birth location is given for either woman. If I'm understanding your question correctly (Did the other entries provide birth locations for the fathers, so that the records we are talking about were noticably silent about that fact?), birth locations are not included for anybody. Christening locations are given only if the person was Christened in that particular parish. It appears that they were only interested in recording events conducted in that particular parish.

Gene, do you want me to post the sources? I can if you would like them.

The marriage to Sarah Gibson is sourced by Family Search, Batch M009411, Source 0496813 Printout Call Number 6909738

The marriage to Jane Dunnel is sourced by Family Search, Batch M105572, Source 0918429 Printout Call Number 6910695

The births of all of the children and the deaths of Richard Exelby, Jane Dunnel and Sarah Gibson are from the Copmanthorpe Parish Registry.
Thank you for your exhaustive search Gene. We have company today so I can't poke around, but will get back with you on all of the information that I do have
