MY gggrandfather William B. ROE, Capt of the schooner Henry Nicholas married Katherine (Kitty) Scott in 1834. Talbot County MD. In Dec. 1835 he drowned in the Bay. Stories vary with no actaul proof. He left a pregnant young widow Katherine whom gave birth to son Willim B. Roe in spring of 1836. Later she married a Pratt and had two children. by 1850 she was married to Theodore Heather.
I have found no ancestors of birth information for Capt. William B. Roe, One ancestor claimed he was born in England abt 1810 but no records have confirmed this. He was also Half owner of the Henry Nicholas.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Glenn ;)

I've traced William B Roe's son, William through the census records. I can't tell if he served in the Civil War or not, but in 1880, it shows he is widowed and suffers from paralysis. If he was in the Civil War, perhaps there is a pension record which may have information on his father. It appears he may have died between the 1880 and 1900 census?

I'll keep looking, let us know what records you have for the family, and hopefully we can help figure out William Roe's heritage. :)

I don't know if there is a link between this people and William Roe, but it never hurts to look. :) I would assume that her son William has died before 1897?

Kate:
Thanks;
GGrandfather William and his wife must have been really mad at each other as the 1880 Census shows him as widowed with Housekeeper and Mary Ann Covey Roe was listed in houshold of John JUMP whom she married later in 1880 after his wife died, she is listed as widow.I have the 1850, 60, 70 & 80 census.
I think Grandfather William Roe is listed as William ROWE in the Household of Alexander Pratt along with Katherine Heather in the 1880 census. Grandfather William born 1858 was in Kansas by the 1900 Census with wife and children and lived until 1944 in Norton County Kansas. Lost his wife in 1908 and raised the 6 children while farming and horse and cattle breeding
Maude Edgell used to write to my mother and her siblings, but many of her stories seem to not hold water.
Katherine Scott was daughter OF John Scott and Sarah Rice of Talbot County GMD Sarah Rice was daughter of John Rice and Elizabeth Clark. Elizabeth was a descendent of the QUAKERs of Talboth county, Tred haven and Tuckahoe. with not ancestors for John Rice and for John Scott.

GGrandmother Mary Ann Covey ROE was a cousin of her husband William Roe (1836) She was daughter of Thomas Covey and Sarah Scott. Thomas was sone of Henry Covey and widow Eleanor Edmondson.

I just cant find Previous records of Capt. William ROE.
Hi Glenn-

Have you found newspapers for Talbot County, Maryland for the time when Capt William Roe drowned? I have access to the Baltimore Sun archives, but I did not find any articles regarding William in 1835. If he was born in the States, he would have appeared on possibly three census records, but only as hatchmarks, as his father would probably have been the head of household in 1810 and 1820. He may be head of household in 1830, but I did not find him there in my search.

I also just found this site:
http://www.tcfl.org/mdroom/

Perhaps you can send a request to the librarian and see if there are materials there regarding William Roe, or newspaper archives for Talbot that would reflect Capt. Roe's lifetime?
A researcher whom I have visited with found on a little more to add to my search of the family.
I did find an article in 1899 when Catherine died titled "Death of a Fortune Teller' relating the life she lived around Royal Oaks as a Fortune Teller" whom the blacks thought could cast spells on them and they thought she was immortal. She wasn't.
Mentioned the tourists whom took carriages up from Easton To Royal Oaks to have their fortune told. Also that she was said to have kept her Gold Coins hidden in her house. Bet they tore it apart looking for the coins.
Thanks for the site and the suggestions.
