He never lost sight of Indian heritage
By RICK RATLIFF
Free Press Staff Writer
Moses Bailey was a full-blooded American Indian who taught his children to speak the lilting Ottawa
language and to read the changing of the seasons in the phases of the moon or the length of an animal's fur.
He could move his broad-shouldered body with silent grace through a forest and knew how to mark a path with stones or sticks. In ceremonial garb, he performed Indian dances - including, the rabbit, partridge and snake dances for -- children at Metropolitan Beach on Lake St. Clair from 1962 to 1967.
Mr. Bailey, of Detroit, a former Ottawa chief, also known by his Indian name, Yellow Sky Eagle, died Saturday in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Alien Park. He was 86.
"He did whatever he could do along the way to remind his children and grandchildren that they were Indians and also to be proud of it," Norma Wellman. his daughter, said. "He was in the middle of two worlds - his world and the white man's."
He was born in Free Soil, Mien., near Ludington, the son of a lumber camp worker, and was graduated from the Mt. Pleasant Indian School. .
As a soldier in Europe in World War I, Mr. Bailey, was wounded in a wrist.
He held a wide variety of jobs - as a tailor, a mail handler on a train, a motorman on Detroit streetcars, an assembly-line worker at an Aunt Jane's Picklel factory and a glass laminator at the Shatterproof Glass Co. in Detroit. He was a member of the North American Indian Association and treasurer of the North American Ottawa Indian Association, Unit 10.
Although Mr. Bailey never lost sight of his Indian heritage or of his family's prehistoric roots in Michigan, Michele Wellman, a granddaughter, said, he also didn't take himself too seriously.
"He showed us where to find humor in things." She said. "He always did little, silly, crazy things like wiggling his ears... or making little faces."
Surviving are his daughter Norma; a son, Thomas Albert Bailey, and 25 grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday in the Wilkie Funeral Home, 11583 W. Outer Drive, with burial in Grand Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may; be made to the John R. WinchesterMemorial Scholarship Fund for disadvantaged American Indians at Michigan State University. (p. 4C DETROIT FREE PRESS/THURSDAY. FEB. 25.1982).

In response to Whitney's query on the ROBINSON & LaHAYE families which are connected, attached is what I have on the family, Additions/corrections greatly appreciated, Thanks, Jim.
Your addition is excellent information. In Generation three, Alice LaHaye's second husband was Fred Bendickson, he died in 1953. Lottie LaHaye married Louis Chingwash, they had another son named Cleveland.
Thank you, Jim.
I've been organizing this all into my family tree but I'm confused by the part in bold, can you explain who we're talking about here? I included the part about Peter Espiew as a reference to what came prior. Who are Elizabeth and Charles?

Whitney, this is the bad thing about posting these genealogies as a document in the message section rather than as an attached document because the “printout” doesn't indent in the proper areas and it is confusing.
Ok,
Laura is also listed as a daughter of Peter's 2m. to Elizabeth PETERS (she was 1m. to a BENNETT).
Laura was married to Charles THEODORE who was married previously and that first marriage record states his mother was a BOCK.
Does that make sense? Jim.
Yes!! Let me make sure I have this clear, Laura might be his second wife's daughter. and Laura's mother in law's maiden name was Bock.
Yes & no. Laura's mother-in-law may be Jennie HINMAN or Sarah BOCK.
Got it. Now that I went back and looked at it closer I can see what it would have looked like with the formatting, thanks again!
