It appears there were 3 distinct Neely families in Mobile, Alabama in the from the 1840s til the great depression: P.P. Neely ( protestant minister), Alexander Neely, (timber merchant from Quebec) and John Neely, a butcher from Cincinatti, Ohio. It would be interesting to determine if there is any kind of link between these families.

John Neely was born about 1819 or 1820 in Cincinatti, Ohio to a man
(probably Thomas) who was born in Scotland and a woman from Yorkshire (probably Catherine Brown). John came to Mobile, Alabama before 1850 and married Frances Hernandez. He was a butcher, a provisions dealer and a stockyard employee. All of which are different ways of saying he worked in the slaughterhouse or abattoir, as the French called it. My grandmother mentioned railroads once, but I have never seen it mentioned in any records. His sons, Thomas Neely, Jefferson Davis Neely and Robert Ed Lee Neely were also employed in the same line of work. His son, John, Jr. was a butcher for a while but eventually is listed in the city directories as a grocer. John's daughters were Onelia, Catherine, Mary Jane ( who may have also been called Mollie) and Elizabeth.
