I found an "H. E. Childress" in Wilkes Co., NC on the 1880 census report in Edwards township that might be your ancestor:

Hiram and Nancy were married about 1891 according to this census.
His parents, Wm F and Dianah Childres were on page 4B. It looks like William was born about 1840 in NC.

I found the death certificate for Diana Childres who died in 1925.
