Comment by Melody Ann 2 hours ago: Good evening, everybody. I'm researching McCurry and Tipton from Mitchell County. They may have been in Yancey County before part of it became Mitchell County. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll share any info I have that you may need. :)>>

Melody,

Can you provide specific names for your McCurry and Tipton families and dates of birth, death, or marriages?

Do you know when and where they were married and how did you learn of Harriett's maiden name?

Do you know what county Washington McCurry was from? Did you find him at home on the 1860 or 1870 census reports with his parents in NC?
Ginger,

I don't know when Washington and Harriett were married. The first time I found them together was in the 1880 Mitchell Co., NC census.

I got Harriett's maiden name from her son Mack's death certificate.

I'm not sure who Washington's parents are. I thought I had found him in an earlier census, but the age doesn't match. I had corresponded with someone else regarding the listing I had found and they told me that was a different Washington McCurry.

I'm stuck on both Washington and Harriett and I'm not sure which way to go. Harriett McCurry was last seen in the 1930 Unicoi Co., TN census. I have sent to Tennessee twice for a death certificate for her, but they will only search a 3 year time period. I'm waiting for the 1940 census to be released to see if she was still alive so I can continue trying to get her death certificate. Washington's death certificate did not list his parents.

Isn't genealogical research fun? :P

Hi Melody,

There can oftentimes be differences in ages on varying census reports. I found Washington McCurry on the 1860, 1870 census reports in Yancey Co., NC, he was living in the household of Eldridge and Rebecca McCurry. On the 1860 census, he was born about 1857 and on the 1870 census he was born about 1856.

I also found your Washington McCurry in Mitchell Co., NC on the 1880 census report. Mitchell Co was formed from Yancey co in 1864, so they are close in proximity. On this census, he was born about 1860;

There was also a much younger Washington McCurry living in the house of Franklin McCurry in Yancey Co, NC also on the 1880 census report, he was born about 1871. This is obviously not your same guy. However, it is totally plausible that the Washington McCurry from the 1860 & 1870 Yancey Co., NC census reports is the same as the one on the 1880 Mitchell Co census reports. The date of births are not that different. I have attached the census reports below.

With regard to someone telling you that it was not the same Washington McCurry - please do not be discouraged by that. I have a very prominant researching telling me that this one guy is not my ancestor, but I believe he is in fact my ancestor AND I have a good paper trail supporting that. So please don't believe everything someone tells you!

Ginger,

Thank you so much for your help! I will check these out and see if I can find out where this Washington's parents were after he moved out.

As for Harriett, I will keep hunting for her. I have faith that I will find her one day. :)

I am also researching the Western NC McCurry's. The McCurry's are my husband's mothers family so I am collecting data on all of them that I can find. I have that Washington McCurry was born about 1857 in Yancey County, NC. I have been told that he died in Unicoi County, Tennessee on December 21, 1908 and is buried in the McInturff Cemetery in Erwin (Unicoi County), TN. He was the son of Eldridge McCurry born 1825 in Yancey Co. NC. His mother was Elizabeth Tucker. Eldridge McCurry was the son of Malcolm McCurry born 1801 and wife Martha Patty Deyton. Harriett Tipton McCurry was the daughter of Sebern & Clarissa Tipton. I have more info on this family if you are interested.
