I have been working on my Avery family since 1971 and haven't made a breakthrough since 1995 when I found my great grandfather's death certificate. Everything points to my ancestors being born in Pennsylvania, but a couple of the Averys show NJ as their place of birth on the census.

My Averys appear out of no where in Bradford County PA just south of Elmira NY. None of them left behind any wills or deeds that were recorded. The oldest I have found is Jacob Avery, my great great grandfather b. ca 1784 then his son Charles Avery b. 1814 d. 1909 who married Lucy West. Then their youngest son, Clarence b. 1856 d. 1939.

In 1840 and 1850 appear an Abijah Avery who says he was born in NJ. Some  of the trees on Ancestry say Essex Co. NJ. Abijah was gone by 1855 when he appears on the Wisconsin state census in Racine. By 1860 he was gone period. A Hezekiah, apparently one of his sons  fought for the 1st Wisconsin in the Civil War.

Another Avery, this one a William appears in the area where my Averys lived in Bradford Co PA He was born 1806 in NJ and died 1883 in Bradford Co PA and is buried in the Windfall Cemetery. He had a wife Sarah and a sister Susan who married an Ayers. (My grandfather's sister Eugenia also married an Ayers) .

Anyone know anything about this bunch? All help, tips or advice is welcome

Jim Avery, Dover PA
