Christine; Here is the ancestry,a s far as i know it, of Sarah Payne. This includes Susannah Pain whos parents are as yet unknown to me. It wouldn't be surprising if your John and my William were brothers. do you have anything on the ancestry of Ann Payne, mother of Anne Hill? BTW, my Hollands came from Culmstock and Uffculme. Hi Thomas,

Had a good look at your chart and nothing links into my chart, as we thought, we need to get that next generation back. Need to look at Holcomb Rogus Parish Registers again, I remember them being very hard to read, but, will give it another go, it looks very likely that we are working on the same family, the village is the same.

The same with Ann Payne, I know nothing more of her. Will also do a search or the surrounding parishes and see what I can glean.

Dear Christine: My humblest and most abject apologies for the unconscionable delay in responding to this message. Thanks so very much for your hard work and for sharing the fruits of your labour with me. If the 1779-01-10 burial you found is that of William Payne, son of Richard and Mary [bp.1777-11-16] and I rather suspect that it is, then the ancestry of my Sarah Payne [see my post above] is not correct. I note also that for the William Payne buried on 1801-04-12 you show age at death as 37. Another researcher shows his age of death as 27. I believe this to be my William, as there are no children of William and Joan baptised at HR after my Sarah in 1800. So he must've been born ca1763-64 [or ca 1773-74]. It begins to look as if my William was not baptised at HR. Also, since William Payne and Joan Blackmore were married on 1794-12-30 at HR, the groom would have been only 17 if born in 1777. Although this is possible, and age of 30 [or 20] years seems much more likely. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on all of this. Cheers for now, T.

Yes, sadly I agree about Sarah. I have found the HR registers very hard to read, and may well be wrong with William's age, when I am next in Exeter I will check this again. [27 or 37] It will be worth looking at the surrounding villages, and Wellington. The hard part is the name is found in all of them!!! Also I must check for any wills, that may help, though, many were lost in the bombing of Exeter in WW2.

I will keep this to hand and come back you. It will not be in the near future, as I have a busy time ahead with farm, family and some events in the village.

Some wills are available on line from The National Archives, and you could try the Somerset links for the parishes on line in the listing on the home page of the Group.
