Okay - found my gg-aunt living in Loppe, Finnmark, Norway in the 1875 census.

But need some help with occupations:

Her husband is listed as: Gaardbruger Lods og Fisker
Two of her children as: hjælper Forældrene
And one person as: Dræng

Translation please? Also, is there a good website for Norwegian-English translation?

Also in the 1865 census this same family is listed with the surname Bjorvig (Bjorvigsdoughter, Bjorvigson) and in the 1875 census they are all listed as Bjorvik (except the wife/mother, who still appears with her 'maiden' name of Vanvik/Vanvig)

Did naming conventions change during that period?

In Norway in 19th century the children surname normally was made from the father first name. If the father name was Anders Olsen, the sons surname will be Andersen, and the dauthers name will be Andersdatter.

My great grandfather George Alfred Peters was born on a sailing ship off Canada in 1884. They landed in St John and he was given Canadian citizenship - or so the story goes. I believe George's father, John Alfred Peters, was a sea captain - this information is from George's marriage registration. The family story is that John Alfred Peters was born in Scotland and went to Norway (supposedly Oslo) where he married (wife is unknown (possible Nina?)) and was given a sailing vessel by her father. George was one of 4 sons. John Alfred Peters died at sea - George was devastated and left his boarding school and hopped on a ship leaving home for good. I have not yet been able to find any trace of either John or George other than George's marriage registration.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have more information, very difficult. George Alfred Peters give many matches on ancestry.com, but I have problems to find the right person without more information. Do know more exact in Scotland and Norway he stayed.

John Alfred Peters was supposed to be from Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland. The only place in Norway that is mentioned is Oslo. The father of John's wife supposedly had some sailing ships and he gave a ship to John to sail between Canada, Europe and China. John is supposed to be lost at sea in a storm returning from Canada. The four children attended a private school. I had hoped to find the family in the census but have not been able to. The only date I have is for George Alfred Peters who was born approx 1884 which is calculated from his death registration. After the death of his father George left private school and jumped a sailing ship as a cabin boy. He sailed for many years and ended up on a patrol boat on the Shanghai River in China when World War 1 broke out. He went to Canada and signed up for overseas duty.

Thanks for the help...nothing I have tried has worked! Hardly surprising given the lack of information!

I am looking for the ancestors of

married couple Lars Helgesson and Joran Halvorsdatter, born in Eidsberg, Østfold around 1672. I have a date of death for her of 2 Jul 1718.

married couple Ammund Steenerson and Marthe Gundersdatter, born around 1702. She died 4 Dec 1736 in Skiptvet, Østfold.

The "church registers" in Eidsberg start in 1710, so I think it will be very difficult to find more ancestors. You can try to look ar the "bygdebøker" or other resources. Link to "Genress" for Eidsberg

I am searching for my Great Grand Uncle with various spellings I have seen of his name. Brynjulf, Bryngel and Brynjulv Haakonson, Haakenson, Hakonson, Haakondson. He was born in 1853 in Vangens Sogn, Voss, Norway. Christened, 20 Nov 1853 in Voss, Hordaland, Norway. He married Kristi Eriksdatter and has 5 children according to books I looked through on line. Gudve(1874), Sigrid(1874), Lars(1876), Erik(1876) and Guri(1880). All born in Opkvitne, Voss, Norway. I know they immigrated to the United States in 1883. Left Bergen May 11, 1883 on the Guion Line. I lost them after that. I am assuming the Americanized their names but I haven't a clue what the change would be. Also my Great Grand Aunt Anna Haakonsdatr born in 1859 in Voss. She left Norway May 19, 1882 from Voss as a hired girl on Cunard Line. I couldn't find where she nor Brynjulv ended up at in the States. Please help I am at a loss. Thank you sincerely, Tina Hogan

Since I have posted a reply on November 4th, I have found the entire Brynjulv Haakonson family...yay me. I am very excited. Still looking for Anna his sister. I am wondering if anyone might want to take a stab at what they think Gudve would have been Americanized to?

Finding a Norwegian marriage...

Karl Johansson, born in Tveta, Varmland, Sweden 19 Jan 1869
Moved to Oslo unmarried but got married there.
Family data from 75 years ago give the marriage date as 22 may 1893 but I do not know how to verify that. Do not know the parrish. Wife was Anna Caroline Larsen.
How can I verify marriage place and date?

Karl died in Oslo 10 Feb 1916 and is buried in a large cemetery somewhere in Oslo with Anna next to him. Dont remember which cemetery.

I do not see a reply so maybe I will take a look. Do you know what last name Peter used? Can you estimate when they came to USA? Did they come from Oslo? Does Oslo have a police list of departures like in Goteborg? Where in USA?

If the family was still growing, I will assume Peter was young when he came. Let me try some US sources. Unfortuantely we are missing the 1890 census. What of the picture? Peter and Emma? When and where? They look about 20 years old which would be in the 1900 decade.
