Hi-

I'm trying to find an ancestor in the NY city directories, she was there on the 1900, 1920 and 1930 census records, but I can't seem to find her on the directories, I'm wondering if there was a charge to be in the directory in those years, or should I be able to find her if she is there?

Her name was Clara/Carrie Lavelle, to my knowledge, she would have been head of household-

Hi, Kate,

Sorry to take so very long to get back to you; I've been having computer problems. Sometimes to be in a directory, you had to be more than just a regular laborer, but I don't think this would have been the case in New York. My guess is that because she was a woman, she either is not listed at all, or is "hidden" in the household of some other male member. If you know the surnames of some of the men in her family, including in-laws, I would check those.

Happy Hunting!
