Hi Ontario Researchers,
Does anyone have relatives that tie into this Paynter family?
This family lived in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England. Joseph has ties to North Cerney, Gloucestershire, England.
Joseph Paynter his sons Thomas, Charles, his wife Esther and their baby William Daniel came to Owen Sound in 1844. "In 1906, Charles (Paynter) wrote: We sailed from Liverpool in 1844 and reached Montreal after three months. It took six weeks from Montreal to Owen Sound, where we took a homestead on the lakeshore and the site is now called "Paynter's Bay." His letter continued, "We started a cooperage mill at Owen Sound, Ontario and made fish and fruit barrels. We had a stave factory and a brick kiln. My father, Joseph, opened a cooperage at Bruce Mines, Ontario (Canada) in 1845. He made ore barrels for the Bruce Mine Company, which shipped silver and copper by boat, not unlike Cornish industry...."
Joseph and Mary's children: Jane remained in England. Daughter, Elizabeth married William Pugh- moved from Ontario to Calumet, Michigan. Mary maried Thomas Harris - they moved from Ontario to Moline, Illinois. Edith Catherine Painter md: 1) Thomas Henderson 2) William Rodgers 3) William Inch. They stayed in the Bruce Mines, Ontario, Canada area. Mary (Polly) Paynter married John Vivian; Thomas Paynter married Elizabeth Jeffrey. I believe Joseph Paynter married in Ontario.
My ancestors: Joseph and Mary's granddaughter, Dianna Paynter married John Rosevear. They lived in Bruce Mines, where a daughter was born. They moved to Ontonagon, Michigan, where John worked in the Minnesota Mine; They were in Orange County, Vermont. They moved to Gold Hill, Story County, Nevada (near Reno) then to Kelton, Box Elder, Utah (near Brigham City), where they are both buried. (After John's death, Dianna married Joseph Ivy Rogers.)
I have more information and would be happy to share.
