Does the Net help or hinder organization?

This aspect of historical research seems to have suffered great neglect, especially since more genealogists choose to live or die at the mercy of a computer and their own browsing ability. Yet genealogical work requires just as much care and intelligence as any other kind of research. And it need not be dependent on a machine to be successful.
