Yes, Sarah was baptized 8 Jul 1821 in Kirtlington [TRAFFORD Sarah d Rebecca TRAFFORD | baker | Kirtlington] - no father mentioned in PRT.

Rebecca and John were married 18 Nov 1823 in Fritwell [HEATH John otp | TRAFFORD Rebecca of Kirtlington | Wit: Thomas Trafford, P.T.Heath | banns].

For Sarah's marriage, I have [GRO: 1851 Jan-Feb-Mar Strand, London, Middlesex vol 1 page 363], but have not purchased the actual record. It is possible she gave William as her father's name, and the recording official may have assumed Trafford.

Otherwise there are about 4 candidate William Traffords in/near Kirtlington in the 1821 time frame...

William Trafford b. 1786 Hampton Poyle, son of William and Sybilla - Rebecca's 3rd cousin - but lived way down in Lewknor.

William Trafford b. 1799 Kirtlington, son of Thomas and Dorcas - Rebecca's 3rd cousin - but this family probably left Kirtlington about 1817 when the father went bankrupt and sold everything.

William Trafford b. 1803 Kirtlington, son of John & Ann - Rebecca's 2nd cousin.

William Trafford b. 1806 Kirtlington, Rebecca's brother.

Hi Pamela
Yes Ibelieve that Sarah was born to Rebecca before she married John Heath. On Sarah's marriage certificate she names William Trafford as her father but I have not really looked at who this might be. probably a cousin as so happened back then

Hi Pamela, I have just invited another descendant of Rebecca (Trafford) Heath (Janet Bott) to this group. I would say that a number of us would be interested in seeing your "details" about their trip aboard "Calcutta", etc. Do you have document images or transcriptions that you could share?

Hi Pamela,
Lovely to have you as part of the group.
Where did you get the inormation that Rebecca was married to a William Trafford?
I was under the impression Sarah was illigitemate.. as in the 1821 Kitlington baptism records.. it only lists Rebecca.as a baker from kirtlington... no father.
Yes, there are still many Trafford descendents around the Yakka area.
Sarah Trafford and husband George Witcomb established the Broughton Hotel in Yakka, Rebecca stayed with them upon the passing of John in 1854.

Hi Pamela,

Thanks for your info and your glowing glowing assessment of my work. Yes, I saw the Quaker connection, but didn't explore to the depth you did - I found a redacted online copy of Nicholas Allen's book, but I will try to get a copy of Christine Bloxham's book (Bloxham a very old name in Adderbury indeed).

To answer your question about finding medieval records - I can tell you it took a lot of fishing. I, like many of our distant cousins, do not live anywhere close to Oxfordshire or Northants (personally I'm in Oklahoma) - though I was delighted to visit the area in 2009 (my photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/ross.trafford/EnglandTripHighlights#).

Some of my info came from numerous emails to groups such as the Oxfordshire and Northants Family History Offices and from the Sulgrave Parish Council. But I have to admit that the lion's share came from careful and methodical Google searches - various combinations of "Trafford", "Medieval" and "Northampton" led me to the old accounts on books.google.com that talked about Stephen de Trafford etc. Once I got an idea of some of the original sources, I wend to the library at the University of Oklahoma, which had copies of the paper on the abandoned medieval villages of Northants, as well as the Victoria County History set, and Baker's book. I was also able to dig up various records at NRA, and requested copies at cheap prices. My prid-and-joy is the seal of Stephen de Trafford (jr.), which I obtained from the British Library after stumbling across mention of it in a list of descriptions of heraldic seals.

It's too bad this family seems to have gone incognito during the Tudor era - a time in which government records were otherwise on the increase. There's got to be something out there.

Hello Ross,
Thank you, I have been on your site and it is brilliant, so much information, where did you get the medieval information from? The main reference for my knowledge of 'John of Grimsbury' and the Banbury High and Bread Crosses destruction by the puritans, comes from a book called 'The Book of Banbury' by Christine Bloxham, 1975; page 15. This event was referred to elsewhere too. I also saw the first mention of 'Trafford' as a medieval site in her book on page 40-41. By the way did you know about our Quaker connection through Henry Trafford born 1656 Adderbury son of William and Mary, marrying Anna Penn in 1690 and having 6 children. This information came through another book Adderbury; a Thousand Years of History, by Nicholas Allen, 1995; page 14 in the chapter on Non-Conformists it mentions a Trafford among those 'constant offenders, attending meetings and refusing to take oaths' I went from there and found the records that confirmed it. I had always wondered why I could not find his marriage, now I knew, I had not searched non-conformist records before, an error I intend correcting.

Andrea, I noticed you are connected to Rebecca Trafford who married John Heath and went to Adelaide SA on the "Calcutta" . I have details of them going to Yakka just south of Port Pirie when her eldest married daughter Sarah joined her mother, and that when John Heath died in 1854 Rebecah had to take in laundry to help support her family. Further than this I do not know, would you mind filling me in with your connection and if the Traffords are still in Yakka. I also had a first husband for Rebecah named William Trafford, father of Sarah, but have no details of his parentage. I moved from London to Adelaide in 1971 and lived there till 1994 when I moved to Brisbane, but as all of my ancestors are English I have done very little research in Australia.

Hi Pamela,

My research is presented at http://sites.google.com/site/wjtraffordfamilyhistory/ - if you follow the sidebar tab to "Prior to the 1600's", you will find 3 stories that discuss a number of possible origin theories and a wealth of records about the Traffords from the 13th through 16th centuries within a stone's throw of Banbury. I update these stories as I encounter new information. I welcome your comments - and please share what information you have about John of Grimsbury and anything else I might not yet have.

My connection is through my mother Florence Trafford on past her grandfather Alred born 1860 Horsepath through John born 1763 and Charlotte Harpur, through Jacob born 1680 Wendlebury, through William born 1647 Adderbury and through William born 1616 of Richard and Alse, Richard died Adderbruy 1642. I have not been able to find Richard Traffords birth but theorise his father was John Trafford of Grimsbury born 1567 ( the John Trafford mentioned by the Puritans in Star Chambers as 'doffing his cap at the Banbury Cross and theredby putting in jeopardy his immortale soul' as being the reason they smashed the Cross down. I found this out recently as well as the 'Trafford' North East of Grimsbury which had been an ancient settlement. This discovery caused me to believe that this was where we Traffords of Oxfordshire originated. I see that Ross Trafford thinks the smae thing and I would ask what your famiy history site is Ross that I may read your gathered information on the subject.

Thanks Ross for inviting me to this group. I am also descended from Thomas (the Baker) Trafford and Sarah Hall, via their son John Thomas Trafford and his wife Maria Walker, via their son Henry Trafford and his wife Mary Ann McCarthy (from Ireland) and their daughter who had the quite interesting name of Kate Maria Adelaide Trafford (not sure of the origin of Adelaide). The Trafford name ended there for my line, as Kate married into the Ming family from Buckinghamshire.
