My great grandfather, and one of my brick walls.

According to census information and death certificates, he was born in Illinois and his father was born in Tennessee.

He married Petronella Elizabeth Michael from Holland; they had three children that I know of: Alice Pait (married to a Robert Jones), Anna Pait (my grandmother, married to James Henry Dorrance), and Henry Ashbury Pait, died a widower, but I have no information on the marriage.

There are two family trees posted on Ancestry.com that name Moses and Petronella Elizabeth. I do not at this time belong to Ancestry, so I don't have access to these trees. I don't know how much information the posters may have. Since the public parts of Ancestry indicate that the posters are descended from Alice Pait Jones, they may be my first or second cousins, x-times removed.

My mother gave me almost no information on her family, so I'm pretty well in the dark in trying to break down these brick walls. Any clues from anywhere would be welcome.

I searched Ancestry.com and could not find anything for "Mose or Moses Ashbury Pait" in Ill.

Can you give me some dates? His father's name and dates.
I DON'T know how I missed this, since I thought I was checking here every day.
In my records I have "born Apr 1982, IL." I think the date came from the 1900 census which asked for month and year. I know the state came from there.
I'm glad you corrected my spelling. He is indeed Moses.
The only clue I have to his father (other than the census data) is from one of the posted genealogies on Ancestry.com. Since I haven't checked into these yet, I haven't added them to my research.
Moses and his wife Elizabeth seem to have been married in Illinois and their three children may have been born there.
Since I posted my query, I have become a member of Ancestry myself; a WONDERFUL birthday present from my husband.

Sue,

Joel Pate, Admin of the Pate-List on Rootsweb, suggested to me that you read this Feb 2010 posting on his list:

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/PATE/2010-02/1266442076

He is answering another and he discusses some Pates from Ill.

"30 Jan 1834 Moses S Pate married Elizabeth Johns (Jones) in Madison Co IL" ...

I am the Donna Hassan who Joel Pate and the Pate List server were discussing here and I must warn you that the Moses Ashbury Pate you are talking about and Moses S Pate are two different people.  Those of us familiar with these families suspect the two men are somehow related  Both have very similar names; both lived in close proximity (IL - MO area) both married Elizabeth's.  If you are truly interested in Moses Ashbury Pate (Apr 1832, IL- 11 Dec 1906, Stl Louis, MO) md.  Elizabeth Petronella MICHAEL (1 Apr 1835, Hoagland, Holland-8 May 1923, Horrine, MO) then I would suggest trying a brief subscription to Ancestry because there indeed is alot of info regarding these people and their children there.  Try PAIT spelling too.  I do not mean to sell you on Ancestry but you will find that a Gail McPherson has photos of Moses A and Elizabeth with baby Alice and etc. (Very exciting) she has alot of photos!   What I do is give my debit card info select a month by month subscription then, go back and cancel the subscription, so , therefore, you only have a month to work with.  Then, after some time, I go back and repeat the process to see if new info has been loaded onto Ancestry, that way I'm not paying for alot of Ancestry time I just don't need.  Also Ancestry offers a two week free trial but you still have to give a debit/credit card but again just cancel it after you get what you want.

On the other hand, my line is definitely from the other guy, Moses S Pate (Oct 1801, Lebanon, Wilson Co, TN-22 May 1888, St. Louis, MO) md-30 Jan 1834 to Elizabeth T JOHNS (abt 1813, KY- 14 Jul 1889, St. Louis, MO); 7 children.

My anscestor is their child #7 of 7,

James Henry "Harry" PAIT (abt 1856/1858, IL-aft. 15 Aug 1893)

md #1 Mary M. RODDIN (my g grandmother) (abt 1858/1861, IL-?)

4 Children:

1. Hula "Lulu" A. (name from *1880 census, **other source supports female child) (b: 31 Jul 1877, St. Louis, MO-?)

2. Charles "Charlie" S (assumed surname HALL at abt  8 years old) (12 Oct 1878, MO-29 Oct 1967,       Vinita, OK burial: Moore, OK Cemetery as Charles HALL)

md Mary BRUZA (8 Mar 1871, Bohemia Czechoslvakia- 20 Feb 1958, OKC, OK),

no children except 1 step daughter by Mary's 1st marriage to Mr. JOBE

3. Probably a boy.  Speculation: Earnest (**other source supports 3 male children in this family) (12 Sep 1881, St. Louis, MO-?)

4. Walter Ira (my grandfather) (lived from young child to 32 yr old as Walter K. HALL the assumed true name Walter Ira (Pait seen x1 thereafter PATE) (16 Feb 1886, St. Louis, MO-16 Jan 1957, Ft. Scott, KS, burial at Evergreen Cem. Ft. Scott, KS) Married 3 times, my grandmother was wife number 2 of 3,

md #2 Anna "Annie" Irene CARMER (23 Aug 1892, Ft. Madson, IA-28 May 1950, Ft. Scott, KS, burial: Evergreen Cem. Ft. Scott, KS next to Walter) and they had 6 children, however, 4 of these were from 2 sets of twins. These children were the only children Walter had of his own and had no known children by his other two marriages.

Please check your records and be sure these two Moses' are not confused.

Donna
