How do I get a copy of the death certificate or death record of my son's father (who is now my deceased ex-husband)? I want a copy not only for the genealogy information it contains, but for the possible cause of death which may warn my son of possible health problems. I have no health information about the family and have had no contact with them for more than 25 years. The PA Vital Records website says that I need to be a member of the immediate or extended family to obtain a copy. Suggestions appreciated.

Can your son order the record?
Hi Kris,

Your son is immediate family. He should be able to obtain his father's death certificate.

If your son is eighteen or older, he can get a copy of the certificate. Otherwise, you will need to contact the family and request a copy. Another way to do it is to have the son make the request, or tell them you are making it on his behalf.

Hope that helps.

Thank you to all who shared your suggestions. However, I may still have a problem in that I had my son's named legally changed when he was 5 yrs old. His biological father's obit lists him with his birth name. So neither I nor my son have the father's surname. Would the Vital Records Office honor my request on my son's behalf? My son wants no contact with the family.
Does your son's birth certificate have his dad's name on it. If so you can send a copy with the request this would prove relationship.

Thanks, Julie. I think that will work. I appreciate you taking time to reply.
