Hi Sonia-
I found an Oswald Beresford-Hope, age 52 arriving in the UK from Bermuda on November 19 1942, I'm wondering if this is Louis's son? Did Oswald start using the full name again?

Hi Kate,

I found this reference recently. Oswald is Louis' older brother. He pops up in the Passenger Lists using his full name. His occupation was 'Imperial Censorship' which I am reliably informed would mean he was probably intercepting telegraphs etc., during war time.

Hi Kate,

Much as I would love to trace Louis' mother ( I have his father's name Charles Beresford-Hope) it is the profession of Actor that intrigues me ! I must be fair as this group really is about Actors and Actresses .

As I have not so far found him in the 1901 Census three years before his death could he have been away working as an actor ? This is what I would love to know. It would be great to know just what is available to see what he might have been doing.

I have his wife and my grandfather aged nine at the time in that 1901 Census living on a farm as a housekeeper. No sign of Louis.

Good morning Sonia-

I think we need to find a resource for British newspapers like we have for the US. I was hoping if he had worked as an actor in the US, there would be a reference to him in theatre books on Google, or on the Fulton, NY site which would have the time period we need, but I haven't found anything on him yet.

But I will keep looking, and please let me know if you find Louis in 1901, I'm wondering if he went abroad in that time period?

Hi Kate,

Morning to you ! Thank you for that but I must correct an earlier error on my part. I was in a rush to go out and incorrectly stated that Oswald was Louis' elder brother. In fact Oswald was his SON as you so rightly pointed out. Ivan Louis was his other son, my grandfather. Will follow your advice regarding newspapers.

Hope I've cleared that up !

:) Good morning Sonia, that's okay, I know I get my folks mixed up at times.
Out of curiosity, I found references to a James Beresford-Hope, who had a statue of Stonewall Jackson made and brought to the US in the 1870s, he died in 1887, is he one of yours?

Oh, my word, Kate !

Or should I call you Sherlock ? I cannot say if he was one of mine but....the Beresford-Hopes, from what I have researched, came about in 1854 when two families married. So James must be in there somewhere. Googling always goes back to Alexander Beresford-Hope who did indeed have a son called Charles but I can find no credible proof at the moment as to whether this Charles was the one. He would have been very young at the time. So probably not.

To my mind the connection is there. Louis married Mary Josephine Hansom. Her grandfather ( my g.g.g.greatgrandfather) was Joseph Hansom who designed the Hansom Cab ( that Sherlock rode about in !). His main occupation was as an Architect. So were his brothers and sons.

The Beresford-Hope family also seemed to be involved in the arts and architecture so I summise that this is how Mary Josephine met Louis.

The other link is this. Charles Beresford-Hope was listed as 'Retired Secretary, Council of India' and it appears that Alexander was also involved in similar activities as an M.P.

So, I believe that James is Alexander, he was Alexander James. :) He apparently took the Beresford from his stepfather's name, but he was a son of Thomas Hope. The dates are right for the James Beresford-Hope I found on genealogybank. :)

I know you are interested in Louis, but it never hurts to find a little extra on the side. :)

Correct ! This is indeed how the name came about. Poor Louis seems to have fallen on hard times which is what intrigues me if he did indeed come from such a family. 'Actor' came out of the blue.
