This is photo of William leading a parade, I've been trying to date it, but haven't been successful yet.

thank you-
I've used the Fulton site a lot- but I missed the 1915 article- interesting thing, Cody had to sell out to Ringling because he defaulted on a loan so at one point before he died, Cody also worked for the Sells Floto Circus, close too the same point of time when William Lavelle did.
If I remember correctly Ringling owned Sells Floto-

Kate: I forgot to include the name of the website I suggested below:
Old Fulton NY Post Cards By Tom Tryniski at http://fultonhistory.com

I found the article by searching on "Colonel William Lavelle"

Kate; here;s another one for the timeline and career

Apparently William was with Ringling Circus 1915-1916 in Chicago.
The article says: quote" Colonel William Lavelle bears a striking resemblance to Col. W.F. Cody. So much so that the big audience now packing the Coliseum in Chicago greet Col. Bill with a salvo of applause as he enters the arena to announce the wind-up feats of horsemanship that conclude the Ringling performance." end quote. From the theatrical newspaper "The Yankee Clipper May1 [year?1915 or 1916] page 9 3rd paragraph down at top mid of page under the column heading "Ringling Pad-room Gossip" scan provided by http://fultonhistory.com.

This is a great site for old newspaper articles-found one or two about my Camille. However, I warn you the text is difficult to read when looking for the topic.

thanks, Myss-
interesting table, amazing how any shows they did back then-and considering William was probably in his late 50s, early 60s in 1911, he must have been in great shape. :)

Kate: nice timeline. When I get many dates for a subject, I put them in a spreadsheet so I can add and re-sort. I see that William was in the Sells Floto show 1911. Here is a site for 1912, but it is a table of the routes that season.
http://karlking.us/1912_route.htm
Just to give an idea of how many places, and how long the travel time was. I don't think it's a stretch that William could have been in NY. However, I do find another William Lavelle or two born in NY.

So, I'm going over some of my work on William. The following are some dates that I have for him(as William A, or W.A, again I don't know for certain that this is one actor or two):

1873- In Chicago directory, listed as William A Lavell, actor
1875- in a McVicker's(Chicago) production of Lady Audley's Secret(as W.A)
1883- Survives the Newhall House fire in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was with Madison Square Company(W.A)
1884- Plays Guildenstern in Hamlet at Haverly's, Edwin Booth as Hamlet(W.A)
1887- In 'Wilds of the West' (William A. Lavelle)
Nov 17, 1887. on birth return on son, Wiliiam Lavelle(later becomes John Henry) (William Lavelle)
1888- in "Daniel Boone" in title role in Michigan
1891- as manager of the Straggler Comedy Company, staging "The Drunkard" at Georgia Opera House, Columbus, GA
1901-possible involvement in stabbing of theatre manager, as William A. cannot confirm is him.
1903- marries Henrietta Rosch Anderson in Ohio
June 1910-Sued by Cody for use of 'Buffalo' in 'Young Buffalo Show'
1910 census- in Chicago, Illinois living with Henrietta, two stepdaughters, Olga and Ella, age given as 60, from PA, parents listed as born in P.A
1911- Sells-Floto Circus

Camille D'Elmar was born Geraldine Lodge. Don't know if she had a middle name. What's interesting to me is that she was my mother's namesake, as well of a coz in Australia. My mum loved opera, and so I was "exposed" to opera as a child. Personally, I don't care much for the moodiness and passion. But she also loved the D'Oly Carte Gilbert and Sullivan operettas which are satirical, I don't mind those (think Mikado). It's possible Geraldine/Camille was in some American production of D'Oly Carte, but I havent found a link. But I don't think my mum knew about her grandaunt Geraldine except through Millicent Lodge, her sister, since she died a quarter of a century earlier. Millicent was fond of classical music performances and played piano in private 'gigs'. So it is satisfying to learn the source and understand my mother's interest and pleasure and why Elvis Presley music was banned from our house. BTW I love many kinds of music, but can't sing or play an instrument. I got the "science" gene, ha ha.

Oh, Kate, your comment about trees is well made. I have made entries in my own tree which is copied through the little leaf on Ancestry by others. I don't mind, but I sometimes have to correct mine, rename somebody, shift a generation, or even delete an entire family. There is one guy who practically copied my entire branch to his own website which he could never have found without knowing something of my family, which was impossible...even though we found we are related coz, but irked me with some comments. Well its his website. But.... I've updated my tree since then, but I don't tell him. He'll have to do some real research or live with his "authoritative" smugness. His site's not bad but got to take it with a grain of salt. So I admit, that's another problem too, egos...and thinking one is done and got all the family sorted.

Hi Kate,
this is a factor we have to deal with in old documents. Think of all the people involved in the old obits-the reporter and his/her contact, then the copy editor, the columnist, the typesetter, maybe he was missing an extra d that day... It's easy to see how a mistake like your "Cal" arising from "Col." abbrev for Colonel, as well as my "Lodge" becoming "Long". Today's errors add to that by the use of uncorrected OCR or Optical Character Reading. I do corrections at an Australian old newspaper site-they "let" you subscribe, ha ha. But it's easy to see how poorly the old type is captured. You can read the facsmile, and make line by line corrections. I feel compulsive about it, but don't have the time to do much more than the pertinent lines I was looking for, and a few above and below.

Hiya Myss-
I noticed that Camille's father's surname is wrong- I really 'dislike' that sort of thing(as my 5 year old says its not nice to 'hate', even though 'hate' is a better word, LOL)
That's one reason I don't use trees much, as any kind of source, if I can help it, because once someone posts it somewhere, its likely not to be corrected, even if its an obvious mistake-

vent away. :)
