Henry Howard rhodes

I know this message has been on the web for a few years, but I have just joined Genealogy Wise and the Rhodes family group.  My gggrandfather was Herod Rhodes b. 1826, d. 1915 in Kentucky.  He is my brickwall.  He was in the confederate army and I can trace his family "down the line" but can find nothing about his ancestors.....I had often wondered if his name was really Howard because the Herod is spelled so many different ways thru his records, census et.
