Hello, Damien!

I have been researching my family for quite some time and have just recently discovered that I have connections to the De Say/De Saye family.

Let me share what I've found:

The earliest DeSaye I have found a connection to is PICOT DeSAYE, the son of Robert FitzPicot [b. c. 1000-d. 1060 Somme, Picardie, France]. Picot was born in c. 1022 in Sai, Orne, Normandy, France. Picot was named the Sheriff of Cambridge, England, and died 17 May 1086 in Clun, Shropshire, England.

Picot was married to Adeloyes [possibly De Coimis/De Comys], b. c. 1029-?. Their son was Robert Picot De Saye, born c. 1051 in Sai, Orne, Normandy, France, and was later known as Lord Clun. He was married to Adeloyse Endash, b. c. 1055-?, also born in Sai. Their children were:

William [Guillaume] De Saye, born c. 1075 in Sawbridgeworth, Cambridge, England; d. 1144 in Hamme Say, Sussex, England. He married in 1098 to Agnes De Grentesmenil, b. 1070 in Grentesmenil, Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France; d. 1094 in West London, Leicestershire, England.

Helias De Saye, b. c. 1078-

Jordon De Saye, b. 1080 in Aunay, Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France; d. 1160 in Normandy, France.

Henry [Henri] De Saye, b. 1087 Clun, Shropshire, England; d. 1121, Clun, Shropshire, England. Henri was called Lord Clun.

Here is some interesting information on one of the earliest of the De Say/De Saye family.

William De Say/De Saye
d. August 1144

William De Saye (1) was the son of unknown de Say.(2) He married Beatrice de Mandeville, daughter of William de Mandeville. He died in August 1144, allegedly killed in an attack on Burwell Castle, Cambridgeshire, along with his brother-in-law 1st Earl of Essex, though he may well have died later.(1)

Between December 1141 and June 1142 he was granted his father's lands in a charter of the Empress Maud. In 1144 he joined his brother-in-law, Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, in rebellion against King Stephen.

Children of William de Say and Beatrice de Mandeville:

* William De Saye b. ?-d. 1 Aug. 1177

* Geoffrey De Saye b. c. 1135; d. bet. 1212 - 1214

Thanks for this interesting info. My 16th gt gmother was ELIZABETH DE SAY of STRATHFIELDSAYE England married to Sir Nicholas D'abridgecourt.. See  RADLEYS OF CORK website under PHANE BECHER(BEECHER) As a matter of interest Sir Nicholas was Constable of Nottingham Castle and Chief Ranger of Sherwood Forest..  Lorraine

Further on DE SAYE ...of STRATHFIELDSAYE, HAMP. ENGLAND...ALICE , wife of ELLIS DE BOELES called heiress of STRATHFIELDSAYE married 2nd husband ROBERT DE SAYE. His land is mentioned in Charter of 1227. He was succeeded by WILLIAM DE SAYE and name changed to STRATHFIELDSAYE. Before 1270 estate passed into D'ABRIDGECOURT family by marriage to ELIZABETH DE SAYE (who died 1404)  to NICHOLAS D'ABRIDGEC COURT. It was passed onto JOHN DABRIDGECOURT who married AGNES BECKINGHAM

SAY or SAYE  a branch of family of AVENAL, LORDS OF SAIE near ARGENTAN THEY USED NAMES OF SAY AND PIGOT.  Attached SAY to lands they acquired. The above branch is likely related to them. My 11th or so gt gfr PHANE BEECHER/BECHER married SUSAN D'ABRIDGECOURT sometime 16th century.
