I set this group up to discuss the Schroer and Schraer families in the Cincinnati area. The two main versions of the name are often interchangeable in the 19th century, and sometimes even into the 20th century.

In Germany the name was most commonly seen as Schröer and Schräer, and it seems to have originated in at least part of the area where the Westphalian dialect of Low German (also called Low Saxon) was spoken. It is a derivative of the more general (and much more common) Low German name Schröder or Schräder.

Quite a number of distinct families of this name ended up in, or went through, the Cincinnati area. In subsequent comments I'll try to identify some of these families.
