Family History Societies/Groups

You have given us some great research sites and information but there is one thing that has not been given much space to and that is the advantage of belonging to your local family history group. How many of the members have taken advantage of this wonderful font of accumulated knowledge. The group that I belong to has been going for 30 years and so there are a lot of members with very diverse interests who are very willing to share their knowledge. We also have a huge number of cds and microfiche with  information not available on any web site.   Knowing how to search is as important as knowing where to look.  Use an LDS library and order in films. Some baptism registers give witnesses to the baptism, often family members, which can help sort relationships. Use everything available to you. 

While some members of Genealogy Wise have incredible knowledge, it astounds me that anyone hopes to find 3 x great grandma born somewhere in Scotland with only a name to go by. Even if someone comes up with a match, you still have to prove that this is your ancestor. Do your homework, work back from yourself, and make use of all the local facilities, including a genealogy or family history group.
