Montgomery Road Block

I'm searching for information on John Montgomery, born Abt 1790 in Vermont. Married a Woman with the last name Fowler but no first name documented anywhere. They had a child named Charles Fowler Montgomery, he was born November 1814 in New York. The family lore is that the Montgomery's came over during the multiple wars with England, they are the descendants of a Scottish Leader and it appears they settled in the New England States. I have not been able to find John Montgomery, who his wife is (the unknown Fowler) or either of those families. I have reached out to the historical societies in Otego, NY where Charles Fowler Montgomery was born and in Pownal, VT where it appears John and Fowler got married but have heard nothing. I'd like to learn when they immigrated and from what part of Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
