Here many persons with this surname came from a Yorkshire family called Ros, Ross or Rosse, who held land in Ayrshire in the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally these people came to England with William, Duke of Normandy, in 1066. Before this they were Norman-French who come from the village of 'Rots' located near Caen, in Normandy.
