what did a "Barber Maker" do?
An entry in the 1871 Scotland Census shows the head of the household with the occupation of "Barber Maker". I doubt he trained hairstylists... but just what did he do for a living?
Another information source said he was an "engine fitter", if that helps at all.

Just left a comment on your query about place names about the poor quality transcription of the Scottish censuses on the Ancestry website and I think this may also apply here!
My guess for this one is that it should be 'Boiler Maker'.
Both 'Engine Fitter' and 'Boiler Maker' might suggest that your ancestor was employed in the shipyards or in an allied trade. -
