Hi everyone

I am researching a Swedish Family named Wernhoff.

I have the American naturalization papers for brothers Svante Wernhoff and Alfred Wernhoff. No patronymic name is shown on any documentation I have.

Svante was born 7th Nov 1858.  His papers say he was born in Skarborg.  He emmigrated in 1883 to Canada via England.  He married in 1885 to Emma Christina Johnson, probably in Canada. He then moved to Massachusetts, USA.  He died in Mass. in 1915.  I found his obituary which stated he had one sister in Canada, one brother in the USA (Alfred),  two sisters and two brothers in Sweden.  His parents names given on his death certificate areAndrew Wernhoff and Johanna Johnson.  These names have been anglicized.

Alfred Wernhoff was born on 25 March 1865.  His papers state he was born in Skaraborglan.  He married married Anna Kristina Andersson in Massachusetts, USA in 1891.  His parents names are given as Anders Wernhoff and Joanna Johnson.

My question is as I do not know exaclty where Svante and Alfred were born, how can I go on with my research?  I have looked at Hans Hogmans website which is very informatative.  I have ordered 2 books as recommended Cradled in Sweden and Your Swedish Roots.  Would really appreciate any help on how to go forward.

Thank you

Answer of David Daniel Cook's query are now in the forum of Skövde Genealogy as Sventorp is a parish in that area.

I am looking for my Great Great Grandfather Sven (Daniel) Sandberg. He was born in April 1833 in Sventorp Sweden. His wife is Louise. Looking for his parents!?

We are coming to Gothenburg Sweden in July and we are taking the train up to Skodve to see if we can find any of the family. Can anyone help?

Have created a Facebook-group with the name Tagesdotter. An alias I use in genealogy as my dad's name is Tage. It's for my genealogy research, tips and links.

The group is closed but you can be a member easy. Be friend to my person Tages Dotter. And I will let you in.

In this group you get more daily contact with me and the other members.

Thank you, Steve--this is wonderful! This is the part of my family that I knew the least about.

I see that some of my previous post did not display.  Here's the missing information:

Jonas Andersson was baptized on 23 March 1798 in Lekåsa, the son of Anders Andersson and Ingrid Andersdotter.  The family lived at Låckatorp frälse in Lekåsa.

The earliest household examination roll for Lekåsa is AI:1 (1799-1814).  On page 12 of this document we find Anders Andersson and family living at Lockatorp Uppogården, born 1 January 1748 in what appears to be "Alg.," which might be an abbreviation for Algutstorp.  His wife Ingrid Andersdotter was born 26 January 1764 in Bitterna.   Among their four children is Jonas, born 22 March 1798.  According to Lekåsa's marriage register E:1, page 1, this couple was married on 28 June 1789.  Anders was a widower, age 37, and his bride was 26 years of age.  She was given a morgongåva (similar to a dowry given to the bride) of 10 riksdaler specie.

The parents' deaths are noted in the household examination roll for the next time period, 1814-1825 (AI:2, p. 17).  Here we note that Ingrid Andersdotter died on 17 August 1817 and her husband Anders Andersson died on 19 February 1819.

Kristen,

The farm name Hökagården is a vital clue that helped locate the family in the household examination rolls for Bitterna.  You are fortunate to have documents that make this research easier and it underscores the importance for all genealogists to evaluate every last scrap of paper left by our ancestors.

The dates listed in the following paragraphs are listed as they were found in the household examination rolls.  Unless a citation is listed, they were not verified in the primary sources (birth, marriage or death registers).  It's important to note this because there are discrepancies found, as we will see.

An extract from the 1890 household examination roll for Hökagården Tolanda lists Sven Jonsson, born 1827; his wife Britta Stina Jonsdotter, born 1837; and their children Tilda, born 1867; Johannes, born 1870; Svante, born 1876; and Emil, born 1881.  The parents' marriage is recorded in the register E:2, page 8, which luckily lists the birthdates of the couple.  Sven was born on 14 October 1827 in Bitterna and Britta Stina was born 20 January 1837 in Bitterna.  In verifying these birthdates in the baptismal register we learn the identity of their parents:  Sven's parents were Jonas Andersson and Maria Svensdotter, age 35, from Björstorp in Bitterna (C:1, page 86) and Britta Stina's parents were Jonas Andersson and Anna Andersdotter, age 33, from Västergården Tolanda in Bitterna (C:1, page 137).  The couple was married in Bitterna on 2 November 1855.

A quick check of Bitterna's household examination roll AI:3 (1830-1838) pinpointed the families living at Björstorp and Västergården.  On page 38 of this record we find Jonas Andersson, born 7 June 1795 in Bitterna; his wife Maria Svensdotter, born 1 February 1794 in Bitterna; and their children Anders, born 27 December 1821; Johannes, born 14 December 1823; Sven, born 14 October 1827; Andreas, born 30 November 1829; and Jonas, born 4 December 1832.  The record notes that this family moved to Västergården Tolanda in 1834.  On page 42 of this same household examination roll we find the other Jonas Andersson at Västergården Tolanda (we differentiate between individuals by the same name by noting the birthdates).  This Jonas Andersson was born in Lekåsa on 28 March 1798;  his wife Anna Andersdotter was born in Bitterna on 3 December 1803; and their children are listed as Johanna, born 28 April 1831 and Anders, born 12 August 1833.  For some unexplained reason, the daughter Britta Stina is not listed even though her birth falls in the time frame of the record (1830-1838).

In checking the baptismal register for Bitterna C:1 (1792-1851) we locate the father's birth entry, or at least what appears to be the correct entry.  Jonas Andersson was born at Barkagården in Bitterna on 27 June 1795 and baptized on 28 June 1795, the son of Anders Svensson and Elin Svensdotter.  How his birthdate morphed into 2 June 1795 in later records is anyone's guess.  It's of course possible that this is a different Jonas Andersson altogether, but I think it is probably the correct one.  There was a Maria Svensdotter born at Björstorp in February 1795, not 1794, but I could not decipher the day of birth.  She was baptized on 7 February 1795 (C:1, page 8).

By following the second Jonas Andersson family through the household examination rolls we locate yet more information on them.  In AI:5 (1838-1853) we find the family on page 26, still living at Västergården Tolanda.  Here we learn that the father Jonas Andersson died on 11 April 1848 and that the daughter Johanna died on 3 February 1839.  Two additional children are listed:  Britta Stina, born 20 January 1837 and a second Johanna, born 28 February 1840.

Jonas Andersson's birth was verified in the Lekåsa baptismal register C:4, page 43.  He was born on 22 March 1798 (not 28 March as noted in the household examination roll), baptized on 23

Actually, two are not postal money orders. They are bank drafts from Omaha to Goteborgs Enskilda Bank, in Goteborg.
