Hope that this is the correct forum to post this question.

My Ancestors are Lars Gustaf Andersson (9/25/1813 Senator & innkeepr)) from Torpane, Tydje and his daughter Laura Charlotta (1/13/1846) who lived in Såbyn.

Lars Gustaf Andersson wrote many documents about his time in the parliment. He also wrote many letters to his relatives with good advice. I have learned that these letters are kept in the town library in Åmal in an envelope titled "A. F. Gustavsson, Torpane.

I sure would like to know what is in those letters and maybe get a better understanding of how my ancestor's lives were during that time.

Therefore,, could someone be so kind to direct me to where I could write to get copies of these documents or even better maybe some one has read them and has summerized them.

Thank you in advance,

Mary

You wanted to look into getting copies of letters that may be in the Åmål library.

A brief search of the Åmål library catalog did not come up with anything. One of the their pages hints at an archive but I was not able to navigate to it to see if the materials were cataloged in the archive. It will require a little more digging unless we are so lucky to have someone from Åmål watching this group.  I have been in Säfle nearby but I do not remember going through Åmål. They are both small towns in a not very populated part of Sweden.

It would be interesting to see what your ancestor wrote in his letters. If he was in riksdagen (parliment) it seems there may be archived documents other places as well.  You did not say why the letters were in Åmål or connected with A F Gustavsson... perhaps they corresponded.

Important: You should always use letters for dates so that there is no confusion as to what is month and what is day since this is an international forum. Americans write 9/25/1813 but (older) Swedes would write 25/9/1813. Better to write 25 Sep 1813 to be sure we all understand.  (in this case there is no confusion of course)

Double checking for Tydje parish... it is found in Älvsborg county and the FamilySearch Wiki does show a Torpane farm name in the parish. Next, I must look at a map to see where these places are. Åmål will show up on any good map of Sweden just down the coast from the large peninsula on the west side of the big lake Vänern. There they are, just a bit further down the lake shore.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you so much for replying.

I too, would love to see what is in those papers. I first found out about them from "bits & pieces" of a geneology report that was written in 1965 for a family that had a different lineage. But, my Lars Gustaf happened to be a son-in-law and because he was famous, more was written about him.

As I was trying to make sense of the documents, I saw his name and description of occupations. (he also was an innkeeper in Torpane, church warden in the Tosse- Tydje parish and farm owner) After mentioning that he was a politician, the following was stated:

"Until some years ago in Torpane a chest was filled with interesting documents about the parliment, the commune and the upkeeping of the farm during the parliment sessions. Most worth reading is his letters to "My Dear Old Women." The letters also show that he helped his relatives with good advice in many a situation. The family-writer has taken care of them, and they are now kept in the town library in Åmål in an envelope "A.F. Gustavsson, Torpane."

1. Based on my research, Lars Gustaf Andersson was a very important man in his era. (I have followed his line all the way to my Great Grandma who came to America.)

2. Unfortunately, I have no idea who A.F. Gustavson is. I am assuming it must be some ancestor of one of his children????

3. I was hoping to learn what those letters say because currently I am in the process of documenting this line for my family. Of course I have birth and death records and dates, but I like to know alot more about my ancestors. How they lived and what Swedish history was like at that time. (I feel I get a better perspective this way.)

4. Because Lars Gustaf was a politician, I sure was hoping that someone else had done some research on him.

5. I could write a letter to the  Åmål Library. Could you forward an address or E-mail address to me?

Thanks again for your time on this. I just find this searching so fascinating and the best part is being in contact with great people like you!
