Translation of Cause of Death

My best shot at reading cause of death...

Starts with an "I"   Likely not a "J" if you look at all of the Johans. I did compare lots of letters.

 

End of word maybe   messic    although double ss  the second s is usually big and it is not here.

or     mersu.

 

Is the little leaf in the image in the original document or a digital watermark?

Cause of death      = Submersio     =  drowning

As a side note, this is a Latin word (that's why you won't find it in a Swedish dictionary.) 

I looked this up out of curiosity in Ordbok för Släktforskare and found it listed as:

Submeraid, a Latin word for drowning. The ending -sio  must be a verb tense. Of course its just a guess as I don't know Latin.

Thank you!  Is that common for the parish records to be in Latin?  I didn't know that I should even look out for that.  I'm really wishing that I would have taken Latin in school.... :)

It is common to find Latin words in the Swedish parish records. For example, Feast Days written for a date instead of the calendar date we'd recognize, a cause of death, or even names that have been Latinized (if that's a real word?) If you trying to find a word in Swedish and its not going well, try a Latin word list. A good list can be found through the FamilySearch Wiki at: Latin Genealogical Word List
