John Robert Taylor, Pickens County, SC

I have the biggest mystery of all time I've been trying to solve since 1974. John Robert Taylor was my great great grandfather, born in Pickens County in 1838. He was the son of Levi Taylor and Nancy Davis (or Dowis). (Levi has also hit a dead end). Robert joined Hampton's Legion Company D. at Bacon Race, Virginia. He is listed on Gist's Rifles as DEAD after the war. 

The family story goes that he was reported dead and came back after his wife, Nancy Mahala Boggs, had remarried. Nancy remarried between 1870-1880 to William Thompson Dodd. The family Bible lists Robert as dying summer of 1869 in Longswamp, Florida (now Marion County) The Bible was printed in 1895, which means Nancy lied as to his death year. Of course it wasn't good to have 2 husbands at the same time. 

I have found a few Taylor's in the Wise, Texas area who resemble my line of the family. Also, Robert's brother Levi Thomas Taylor and his son Earl Preston Taylor settled in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. I visited one of his great nephews back in the 1980's who said his dad used to visit Robert in Rabun County, Georgia in the late 1880's.

The Taylor line I'm looking for is easy to identify. Tall men, blue eyes, long fingers and big ears. Mean as a snake also describes him. He beat Nancy on a regular basis, and most of the Taylor men had the same temper. My grandmother knew Nancy well and retold me all of the stories before her death at 93.

Ancestry.com has even tried to locate him and hit a dead end. I'm looking for Robert, as well as to who was his grandfather, father of Levi. It's not the line in Newberry, SC that everyone has wrong. That was a different Levi. Any help is appreciated.

Thomas Taylor and Benjamin Walter Taylor also served in the same unit during the war and may be related, but I haven't proven anything.
