I've about come to the conclusion that most everyone in Scott County is related somewhere along the line...lol. I see the same names popping up and sprinkled throughout my ancestors and related families. I am researching Sharp, Stephens and Chitwood primarily, but have intersected with many others. If all the Scott County researchers come together we could probably piece together some puzzles.

I am not sure what you need but using my current tree information (which may or may not be accurate as we go backwards) my maternal grandmother was Nancy Jane Smith b. 23 Aug 1882, d. 8 May 1925. Her mother was Mary Stephens b. 9 Jun 1857, d. 10 Jun 1925. The previous info is pretty accurate. The following is less certainly accrurate. Mary Stephens' father was Edmond Stephens b. 10 Feb 1809, d. 1889 and her mother was Mary Polly Thomas b. 1805, d. 1865. I am in the process of checking the Stephens side out with a researcher who has better records.
Phillip,

Those are my Stephens. Edmond and Mary's son, James Granville Stephens was my 3rd great grandfather. I'm showing a Rachel Mary, born about 1851 as his sister. I have been in contact with several Stephens researchers/cousins and have gotten a few pictures and information. I will be happy to share what I have.
I was interested in an article I found on Ancestry.com by Tom Des Jean, a National Park Service Archeologist, on "A History of Mining for Saltpeter in the Big South Fork" which quotes my great aunt Frona Thompson: "Mrs. THOMPSON described her grandfather, EDMOND STEPHENS, as a Cherokee who also made gunpowder in the No Business area of Big South Fork and sold it to the Union army. On one occasion during this conflict "rebels" blew up a batch of his powder." I do have the information that Rachel Mary was born in 1851 according to the 1860 census and James Granville was in the Civil War for the South. He married Minerva Jane Ross according to one source.

Do you have any specific knowledge about Edmond being Cherokee? Do you have any specific knowledge about his parents and grandparents. When I get back that far I start getting all sorts of suggestions.
I believe that article came from the FNB Chronicles. The USGenweb page for Scott County has a lot of those transcribed. There are some very interesting stories there, although I haven't seen the Stephens name a lot. I have no information on the Cherokee angle.

The information I have come across says that Edmond's parents were Edmund Stephens and Elizabeth Richardson. I do not have documentation for that. I have nothing other than the names.

Charles,

I haven't come across that name, but the Chitwoods came out of Virginia. He is possibly a descendant. I descend from Matthias Chitwood and Mary Key. He came here somewhere around 1696. Do you know any of the ancestors of your Chitwood?
I dont' know if this will help, but I found this biography for William P Chitwood on Rootsweb in Colbert County, Alabama
Thanks Charlie. I bookmarked it.
