This is primarily for anyone interested in the Shakers at Pleasant Hill and South Union, KY. I am glad to share what I have researched and do lookups if you think you might have an ancestor that belonged to the Kentucky Shakers.

whew...I just took a chance in posting the info to you...so glad you got it. I agree legalese is difficult to fathom at times......but I would try to contact Mrs Curry at Pleasant Hill...think her email can be found on their website......if there was such a legal issue about land problems going on at PH..she may have more knowledge of it. She is wonderful and knows everything going on in the early days of the society. As to a divorce....I would certainly check both in Garrard County, KY as well as Mercer County, where Pleasant Hill was located. His joining the Shakers may have been the reason for the divorce and using that old law that if a couple has one that joins the Shakers and won't leave.....it was cause for a divorce according to KY law......I'd like to know more about the transcript you found ....how did you find it? I'd like to add to my research on the Shakers with another source at hand. My own connection is through two of the first original families to join....my 4th gt grandmother and 4th great grandparents..one of them, John Banta, held the first organized meeting of the society at his barn in Henry/Shelby County, KY [it was about on the county line...near Pleasureville, in Shelby County. His half sister, was the other 4th grandmother...found her grave about 2 years ago in the Shaker cemetery .....been working the Shakers for almost 15 years and know Mrs curry to be a very good source if she is still there. If I can check on any other names or answer any questions, let me know.

Thank you Barbara, I appreciate the intormation. I'm sorry I guess I sent an email through the site rather than posting it. I can re-post the query if you think it will help.
The family does believe Napoleon and Hester divorced, it's just a matter of finding a record if there is one. The dates for Napoleon will be most helpful. John...who knows... all I have on him is a 1 year old infant on the 1860 census and some family trees floating around without much documentation. I'll keep this info nearby to see if he connects somewhere.
I found a bit more info on Napoleon including a couple of pictures on one of the historical sites. I also found a court transcript in google/books where the PH, he and some of the other elders where being sued by the person the decendant of the person who sold them the land. I couldn't make much more out of the transcript, too much legalese.
Napoleon and John are a bit of interesting history, I'll continue to look for pieces to the puzzle.
thank you for your help,
Trudy Lusk
I just had an email from this site and from Trudy Lusk...but can't find it when I got on genealogywise for the Shaker page I started....so am going to hope this gets to her......
first of all it appears Tandy Brown died and was buried at Shakertown/Pleasant HIll on July 17, 1870....there will be no marker..very few are left and they are from the original area of burials dating to about 1813 to app 1835...give or take a year either way. There are some more recent stones but none of them for this time frame and the Shakers marker would have only the persons initials carved on it........It also says Tandy was born 5/1/1857 in Garrard County, KY..it does not give any further information for him. I am using Marc Rhorers book GONE TO THE WORLD: VITAL STATISTICS ON INDIVIDUALS IN THE SHAKER COMMUNITY AT PLEASANT HILL, KY published in 1992 and original copy found at Kentucky History Center, Frankfort, KY and another found at the Filson Historical Society, Louisville, KY. I have my own copy to use for queries.
There is John William Brown listed ...with the following info....born 9/11/1865 Bullitt County, KY, arrived at Pleasant Hill on 12/9/1868 and no further info given.
The following Browns are also listed just for your records and who knows..might mean something.....
Clarissa, arrived 3/12/1846 , deceased [apparently at PH] but no dates or further information.
James, born 8/23/1859 Bullitt County, KY arrived at PH on 12/9/1868 and no other info but seems to be closely related to John William as to arrival date and from same county.
Monroe born 1/5/1855....all the info listed on him.
Napoleon D. born 9/15/1838 Garrard County, KY arrived at PH on 10/5/1865 no indication of when he left or if he died and buried there.
There are two William Browns listed but no info on either of them...though a note on one of them said it was his second time to come to the Shakers. He might have been a winter Shaker.
Those are all the Browns listed in the Rhorer book with the info taken from the original journals kept by the Shakers.
I find it interesting that Napoleon landed in Pleasant Hill in the fall of 1865.......and in KY he could have been in the Union OR Confederate armies......so might want to search through both records. You might also want to check divorces in KY...especially Mercer County.....I don't know how long the law moved down to the years Napoleon was at PH but at one time the law in KY read if one member of the married couple was a Shaker...that was good enough to get a divorce from them.....just a thought as I had cause to research that for one my Shaker family members.
Other than the John William there are no other John Browns listed and Mr Rhorer was thorough in his research on the members of the society....might find a typo but in general his book is quite good on info on the Shaker membership.
You might want to contact someone at Shakertown.....through their website for Pleasant HIll.....to find anything further. I know I have been adding to the families I descend from that went to the Shakers and left .......as they were wanting to get more info on the members and descendants. Its possible someone has sent in more info on the names you are seeking or have info I don't have at hand. I would hope Mrs. Larrie Curry is still there...she is an encyclopedia on the early Shakers and might have more info on the Browns.
