Re:Thomases from Mississippi and Texas - The Matthew Thomas you refer to is found in Lowndes County (1837 census) and Oktibbeha County (1840, 1850 and possibly 1860 census) in Mississippi. Those of us who are related to Thomases in that same area have tried to determine if he is as we suspect related to one of our lines. I believe him to be related to my GGrandfather Benjamin S. Thomas (b1822 TN), who married the daughter of a neighbor of Matthew Thomas. This neighbor, William Noel Valentine is one of the people who traveled to Lee County, Texas by wagon train in the mid 1860's along with several Thomas decsendents (possibly including the Charles Dawson Thomas you mention) and other former Oktibbeha County natives. I am aware (as you probably are) of the old story about Chalres Thomas killing someone and having to flee Mississippi, and that is why he ended up in Texas. I have no idea as to whether that story is based on fact or fiction. I would be happy to discuss this family further if you are interested. JM Thomas
My Thomases are from Mississippi and Texas. Matthew Thomas had a son, Charles Dawson Thomas who was born in Mississippi in 1850. He died in Burnet Co., TX. He married Laura Emily Ferguson. They had several children, one of which was my great great grandmother, Nola/Nora A. Thomas, born in Texas in 1886.
THOMAS Surname Meaning & Origin:
