Being that he was captured at Chickamauga, this was in September 1863,5 months before Andersonville took its first prisoner. The vast majority of enlisted men were taken to Richmond and odds are very high he was at Belle Island in the Jame River. When the war ended and exchanges progressed, it was not as single soldiers walked and passed each other over a field but they pretty much were sent home as soon as friendly forces recovered them. The exchanges were just working out the paperwork as even though it was war, paperwork was still involved.

I wish we could find records like that for my GGG Grandpa Eli Baker. I thought a Confederate was exchanged for a Union solider or was this a foolish statement and you where looking for more info than that.

I've been reading about these exchanges some on the web but am wondering if there were some type of records kept for who was being exchanged.

Thanks so much, Kevin...do you know what usually took place when they made those exchanges...were they exchanging them for Southern prisoners...Isaac was in Andersonville from Sep 1863 until Mar 1865...that's amazing!
