Sarah, if your ancestor was in the Confederate militery, you can go to the Daughters Of the cONFEDERATCY web page. You can order your ancestors militery service and penion record BOTH for 35 dollors. I got my ggg uncles that way..tons of information. Hope this helps
NARA is the National Archives and Records Administration. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has most of the Federal Civil War Pension files physically there. NARA has many regional offices and may have one near you as well. Go to www.archives.gov to find out how to request your records and to see their fee schedule. (Fold3 has many of the file numbers you can refer to.).
That would be my first step to locating the files that Family Griot is looking for. Also I would check with the State where their veteran joined to see if they have any records.
