I didn't know there was a "Vinson" cemetery in Anniston. My Vincents were from Talladega which is not far from there. What are directions to the Vinson cemetery? John Vincent (1787 - 1871) was born in Johnston, NC. He fought in the Indian Wars aka the war of 1812 under Andrew Jackson, and with Nicey Hawes (1794 - 1851) of Wetumka, AL became the parent of 16 children. They buried him near Vincent, AL (no relation) in the cemetery of the Salem Presbyterian Church (formerly Resin Hill).
His 14th child was Aaron Vincent (1835 - 1901) who owned nearly 600 acres in Talladega County. Aaron was my great-grandfather. John Vincent's 15th child was Louisa Catherine Vincent (1837 - 1898). Louisa was grandmother of Maud McLure Kelly (1887-1973), the first woman to practice law in Alabama, an avid genealogist who was instrumental in setting up the Alabama Archives. Ms. Kelly gave her vast collection of papers to the Samford University Library on Lakeshore Drive in Birmingham. It was to this collection I donated John Vincent's family bible (pub. 1828) which lists his 16 children. John's father is Aaron Vinson of Johnston County, NC.

Another reason the names and in the case of one of my gr granddad's, the dates of birth were changed from census to census was to avoid being known and thus found to be "Indian". My Hunter line did just this. He did so many things to avoid anyone knowing who he was, when he was born and who his parents were. At least with my Vinson's I have some idea of their line. It is just proving it. Jesse is also a family name that was passed around from Grandfather to one of his kids to their nephew, to their son and so forth. Makes it real difficult for us in this 21st century.
My grandparents are buried in the Vinson cemetery in Anniston, Al.

I see your difficulty with a name like William. I found 7 "William" or "Henry" Vincents on South Carolina censuses from 1850 to 1900. It is always more difficult when the name changes back and forth. I am fortunate to have many family records dating back to the early 1800s which helped us confirm what we found in census records.
I think many name "changes" were from illiteracy or poor or careless spelling which is frequent in documents of earlier periods. Names on many records were spelled according to the writer's discretion.

I am also interested in this group. My gr grandaddy was William Henry Vincent/Vinson. His family went from Vincent to Vinson and back again. He was born in 1832 in Spartenburg SC. He married Martha Kennedy/Canady, born 1843. They lived their latter years in Calhoun County, Al. I think it is odd how both families changed their names so often, usually from one census to the next. We think his dad was Jesse Vinson but I have not seen the actual papers that say this. If anyone can help me here, I would appreciate it.

Julie,
I'm sure your in-laws will appreciate any research you do for them.

Oops! I just read your post again and noticed your mom couldn't be the same as the person below if she was born in 1913. Sorry. -rv-

My family changed their surname from Vincent to Vinson and back to Vincent around the time of the American Revolution. Some have suggested this was because the name "Vincent" was associated with the Norman French (aka British overlords). You're a lucky man to have been able to trace your Vincent ancestors all the way back to the "old country."
I'm assuming you found your mom as a child of George and Vitue Vincent in the record listed below:
Name: Virtue Alice Vincent
Residence: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Christening date: 1879
Christening place: TEMPLE, BRISTOL, GLOUCESTER, ENGLAND
Birthdate: 1877
Father's name: George Vincent
Mother's name: Virtue
Gender: Female
Batch number: C17295-4
Date range: 1813 - 1902
Record group: England-VR
Film number: 1597124
Collection: England Baptisms 1700-1900

My mother's maiden name was Virtue Vincent, born in Bristol, GLS, ENG in 1913. I have only been able to trace her family back to the 1841 census with any certainty when the interchange between Vincent/Vinson becomes confusing.

I'm glad to see other Vincents join the group. Welcome Julie. Please feel free to post whatever your asperations are for this group or this site. I can't say much for the site since I have nothing to do with it but I think it may become helpful in the long run. For now, these groups are just an area for discussion. Hopefully the site's creators (Paul Allen CEO) will eventually add features we can use to collaborate and share source-based records. That's my hope anyway. What hopes do y'all have for this group / site?
