I have an opportunity to get back to WV with in the next month. My maternal line lived here for many years. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how where the Stanaford Mine Cemetery is. I have tried googling it and the only thing I have found is it is on Rt 41 (I think) I have a few ancestors buried here and would love to get to it. The last time I was there, I was told be a relative that it is hard to get to. I am ok with having to hike into it. I just would like to be able to get in there and take some pictures of family stones. Plus, I have no clue if and when I will be able to get there again. Also, is there anyone I can contact that would have knowledge of the plots themselves, as I do not know how large this cemetery is, could be a lot easier if I knew exactly where to go.
I can dream right?

Terri, I tried this Dept. of Interior site - http://geonames.usgs.gov - to see if they had a map for the cemetery. I found maping for the following: Stanaford Branch; Stanaford Road Church; Stanaford Station; Stanaford; Stanaford Elementary School; Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church; Stanaford Census Designated Place; Stanaford Post Office. I then searched just cemeteries in Raleigh county and came up with 113 names but not a Stanaford. This is a pretty neat site if you have a GPS because it gives you the coordinates of the place. Or it will take you to a Google map.
The MyFamily sites have a Raleigh & Wyoming County site. Some one there might be able to help, it you are interested I will need your email address to request an invitation for membership for you.

Kay,

You can reach me at toc5871@aol.com.
Everything you listed is all I have been able to find as well. I am also going to send out some emails to see if anyone else can find the info for me.
Thanks
Terri
Terri, Just sent off the request for you to get an invitation to the Raleigh-Wyoming County MyFamily site. Don't know how quick they are to respond and hope you find some other folks working your family there.
Kay
Kay, thanks. I appreciate it!
the Find A Grave Website was the only place that I found reference to this cemetery.
From this web site http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/CJ-WV-021.html

I found:

Stanaford Cemetery
Route 41 South
Stanaford
That is it. No link or any other information.
Have you tried contacting the local church or funeral home? There is a Grace Baptist Church located in Stanaford. Their number is 304-252-3074. There is a Blue Ridge Funeral Home about 3 miles away. I found 2 numbers listed, they are 304-256-8626 and 304-462-2677. You may have to try the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department 304-255-9300.
Thanks Darlene,

Right now I am trying family to see if they remember. But most likely it will take a few phone calls. Thanks for the numbers.
OK, don't laugh. But, going through my family on my Richmond family I found an email that gives me instructions to the cemetery. So I am going to post here so if anyone else would like to know.

1. Leave Beckley going North on Stanaford Rd.
2. Travel approximately 5 miles and you will go through a 4-way stop
3. After the intersection you will be looking for a convenience store (you will know it is the correct convenience store because across the street on the right is Hoist Road or sometimes called Stanaford Hoist Road
4. Right next to the convenience store there is a dirt road that is getting overgrown and may even look like a trail now
5. You will be able to follow the dirt road/trial for approximately 1/4 mile and it leads directly to the cemetery.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. New lesson today, go through my files first!
Hi Terri, I am not familiar with this particular cemetery, but the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants organization may be able to help you. Try google to get their web site and contact info. Hope this helps.
Patsy, not really in the plan right now. This trip is to look at colleges and I am pushing it stopping in to visit the cemeteries. I have not even set up to see any family while I am there. Though, we will be driving through Charleston on the way home. I guess it would depend on how long it takes for me to find things n the cemetery. The warning of snakes near the Stanaford Cemetery already has me terrified. I would not know what to do if I saw one....They scare me!

So, I will give Charleston I thought, though I think it will be the weekend when we go through there.
Terri
I have relatives that lived in that area of Stanaford, WV too. Have you gone to rootsweb to see if thats cemetery has been put on line yet.

Are you planning on going to the archives in charleston, wv while your in town?
