I have looked through rootsweb and familysearch and have not managed to find anything about them. I've started trying to find online census records for surrounding states, but haven't managed to find any sites that dont require user names and passwords or payments.

Shawna....keep in mind people moved around. My grandfather was born in WV but lived in Pittsburgh,Pa and died in Washington DC. Any surname you or someone finds that the same as the one your researching....check it out. At the least make a note of it. (you should see how many notes I have...lol)

John, I dont think that there is any connection there unless it is distant. My grandfather was born in 1931 in Morgantown.

Shawna, there is an R.S. "Listen" Preston County death record on the WV Culture site...b. 6 July 1861, d. 8 July 1922....any connection there? Search for "Listen" surname.

If anyone is searching for William Underwood from the state of Delaware during the Civil War, check out the Delaware Public Archives site (http://archives.delaware.gov/CivilWar/index.shtml).  The Delaware Archives has digitized their Civil War records and slides 0702 through 0705 indicate William Underwood served as a Private in the 5th Reg't Delaware Infantry and in Capt. Hounsfield's Co. 5 Reg't Del. Inf.

Mustered in Oct 25, 1862 and Mustered out Aug. 10, 1863.

I am uncertain if this William relates back to my Underwoods from Tyler County or not, but it may be of use to someone.

If your grandfather was born in Preston County, I'd start my search there and work backwards.  You've probably already tried the U.S. census, but take a second look concentrating on Preston County.  If your family was  located around the Morgantown area, you might even look at some of the PA records, since the areas aren't that far apart.  For example, after exhausting every WV source for my great-great-grandparents, I decided to check neighboring counties in Ohio and found they were actually married in Meigs County, OH, even though they were both WV natives.

Jeanne, and Kay, from what I gather most of them were from Monongalia County, which is where a lot of family was buried, but my grandfather was born in Preston. I've looked on the wvculture site, but have not tried the * yet. I hope that maybe the Liston name will be crackable sometime. I know my grandfather tried to do research on his family and even he couldnt get very far.

John, have been checking out your website for close to 2 hrs now...lots of interesting info! Found some familiar names, just need to find the connections.
Love the photos, too, unfortunately I don't think you have any (yet) that relate to me.
Thanks for the info.
